So the AKC American Water Spaniel I picked up in Jan through a contact on this board appears to have been beaten.

I had hoped to work with him more but life has just been too busy and I decided to get him training with another person for use as a duck dog. They said since he is now near 2 yrs old he may be difficult to train but likely could be trained if he is not gun shy. So, we took him out a week ago with the shotgun to fire a few rounds.

When we arrived I got the gun out and the wife unloaded the dog. At first he seemed a bit nervous but excited to explore a new area. We let him explore and run a bit before doing any shooting. We started with him on a leash about 50 yards away and he handled it well. We moved closer and closer until he was at my side and he showed no signs of being afraid of gun fire. In fact, he would sit at attention and turn his head in the direction of the shot every time and appeared to be looking for something to fall out of the sky. GREAT NEWS RIGHT?

Well when I would set the gun down beside me he would immediately tuck his tail and bury his head and try to get away. Every time the slide racked forward on the A-11 he would cower down. Concerned that it was the smell of the gun powder, I let him smell a spent shell and he had no issues. So now concerned it was the sound of the slide, I placed the gun on the ground and backed off 20 ft and called him to me. He approached but when the got to the gun he stopped cowered down then backed up and made a large circle with his tail tucked around the gun.

Is there any other conclusion other than the previous owner beat this dog with a shotgun at some point?

FWIW he does not act this way with any other objects including those that are similar in shape or size to guns even when you are holding them. I already know the previous owner lied to me about the dog and his reasoning for letting it go. We spoke with the breeder after we got him and know that the guy I got him from had complained of the dog being aggressive, eating through the fence, and that he was actively seeking another pup. He had told us he had to get rid of the dog due to a baby on the way and a lack of money. He described the dog as well mannered with great potential.

mine is deathly afraid of the broom. I am the only owner since birth and never beat her with it. Maybe it is just scared of the shape

If he didnt cower at the sight of the gun before the shooting commenced, id say he is associating that loud noise with the gun and is a little afraid of it. I would be throwing dead pigeons or ducks while shooting, and do it as often as possible. Also, take him out in the yard with the gun in tote, and just show him aftection while the gun is present.

This was going to be my exact reply. She never leaves my side. Open the broom closet and she starts getting a bit nervous. Pick up the broom, and she's gone. If it were beatings, mine would be afraid of my right hand.

I would keep the gun handy and but switch to birds, live ones. Quail would be great, clip the wing and left the dog chase a couple down an build that instinct. Associate the gun with birds and when you have him hooked and then bring back shooting...

No but honestly the shotgun was not close to him prior to shooting. He has never cowered when around my rifles.

Doing this with every feeding and the gun now sleeps in his kennel with him along with a hand full of spent shells.

A dog cannot tell the difference between a rifle and a shotgun. He is most likely a but gunshy. Start him off with a .22 and provide a bird to him as suggested earlier. Move up to a shotgun once he is very comfortable with the .22.

My old dog hated our vacuum. I guess he associated it with a loud noise and was afraid of it even when it was turned off. Your dog might have a similar association with the gun. I wouldn't jump to the conclusion that you are making

He can tell the difference between my dodge diesel and my buddies duramax from inside his kennel in the house.

In yall's opinion this is normal for gun shy though? No attempt to bolt while shooting. came to me wagging his tail from 50 yards out to by my side while shooting. No signs of fear or ducking his head or cowering while shooting but afraid of the firestick after the fact?

Nothing will build desire like a live crippled bird. Let him want that and then associate the gunfire with birds and there is a 95% chance the problem will be solved...

Pigeon, quail or a similar smaller bird. You don't want anything that will attack back at this stage. Check craig's list or pigeons can be netted at nice with a spot light and a long handled net from overpasses...

My catahoula was a rescue dog. The wind thru the trrees scares her. We've had her for almost 4 years now and there's no change. Mt advice would be to just leave your dog at the house and find the previous owner and beat him.

I have a similar situation with my dog. As long as I'm just holding any gun he's fine, but once I shoulder it he starts freaking out. Any ideas on whats wrong? He'll run infront of the target and bark like crazy. I'd say it would be the noise, but he does this when I'm shooting my bow also. He's weird as frick.

I found the guy that Wickowick turned me onto at the Angola Prison Farm.

He'll have fully matured quail and grouse at the end of june.

When we run our dogs on the quail, I will defiantly post the pics.

Thanks for the help wickowick

Sounds to me like the guy hit the dog with the butt of the gun some when the dog didn't do what he was suppose to.

Not sure how to break that. Treats and a lot of affection with the gun?
