Sounds to me like the guy hit the dog with the butt of the gun some when the dog didn't do what he was suppose to.

This is what I was thinking too.

I will say this and my dog might be the exception but i have a 3 year old lab who is deathly afraid of unloaded guns in the house. Now when i take him duck hunting or bird hunting he is an absolute machine. I dont know what it is but its weird. Dont count the dog out yet

he was at my side and he showed no signs of being afraid of gun fire. In fact, he would sit at attention and turn his head in the direction of the shot every time and appeared to be looking for something to fall out of the sky.

So, what's the problem?

quote:

when I would set the gun down beside me he would immediately tuck his tail and bury his head and try to get away.

Get a fricking sling, problem solved. I never 'set my gun down' in the field anyway.

How bizarre. I don't think I've ever beaten anything with my shotgun.

There is a chance it has been hit with the gun. My dog doesn't freak out over the gun but if he recently messed up he is watching that 10 gauge barrel pretty damn close

After the first time I shot a 12 gauge I was scared of it after also. Maybe the dog isn't big enough, start it out with a 410.

I can't believe I wasn't mentioned yet. Let the dog eat with the gun by him. Hit some pans with a spoon while he's eating with the gun there.

You know, when you get really drunk and do things that you dont remember the next day and your buddies have to tell you what happened? It may be like that.

I mean, damn. I've beat my labs arse with a chewed up shoe but how much force do you need to get your point across. It wasn't the dog. The owner had some pent up issues already. frick him!

Damn BP. Sorry I got you into that mess.

FWIW, my boykin has some very unusual tendencies and is petrified of the most random things, particularly people with more melanin in their skin.
