I remember when the F-150 was pretty common with the 300CI I-6.

I think they’re fine for 250k with a 170° thermostat and tune, good oil and gapped plugs, and replacing oil and coolant lines and coolant pump when they start to leak. The heaviest duty engines use turbos. Don’t let them scare you.

If I was going to try to get more than 250k I’d go with a V8. But not a GM or Dodge. Or a Nissan. Toyota out by default. Pretty much just Ford.

Before the truck became the family vehicle.

Check out a few of the old Ford commercials from the 1980s, damned fuel mileage was (advertised as) the same then in the 300. That 300 would run forever but wouldn’t get out of its own way.

2023 Colorado will not even have V6 option. The 4 cylinder they are putting in them have more HP and better gas mileage

Yeah, they're going with the 2.7 Turbo that's in the Silverados. Should be a ton of power in a Colorado.

I passed on with GM five years ago when I wanted a Silverado with the 6.2 V8. Well GM is (or was) extraordinarily stingy with the 6.2. You had to buy a $75k High Country to get it. So screw them.

I bought a Tundra which I love but it’s now throwing up codes for exhaust/catalytic converter issue. Which is bc some prick stole my cats last year and the replacements were not OEM.

That is the key. Today’s V6’s will tow almost everything you want and get better gas mileage than the V8’s when you are not towing.

I agree they will tow it, won't get any better mileage when doing it but do around town. I am still not convinced they will last if used for towing more than occasional light to moderate loads.

I know three guys who have had turbos go out on trucks with less than 100k miles, two under 75k.

A turbo V6 offers plenty power. But I’ll never buy a full size truck with a naturally aspirated V6. I had a 1999 F150 with the 4.2 V6 and my god was it a gas guzzling slug. 13-14mpg and struggled to stay at 75mph. Yeah I know new V6s have more hp, yada yada.

I'm somewhat surprised by the push for small, turbocharged engines. I like those engines in little Japanese cars, but I don't want one in a truck.

V6 engines have a much better history in pickups.

That’s what I don’t get… if you are going to force people from v8 to v6, shouldn’t we get better than a 4mpg advertised improvement? And the reality is the towing mpg is a wash or loss.
