There is stuff out there more extreme than this...

You might as well have Kirby Allen build you one of his .375 allen mags. Serious money but serious mile long groups too.

WTF? You a marine sniper in Afghanistan? I cant even see that far.
I had dinner with an African PH with 35 years of experience. He said two things that night that have stuck with me:
1) The one thing we PHs are all afraid of is Lions. Do this long enough, and you WILL get chewed.
2) no matter the client, the gun, the situation, or the animal. Take a shot over about 300 meters, and you're just hoping it works out.
Dude was pretty grounded.

There's lotsssssss of people out there toting a .300 win mag with a night force scope who can barely hit a dart board at 300 off of a shooting bench and think they're capable at 500 out of a tripod in the middle of a cutover.
I consider myself pretty good at killing stuff, and beyond 300 yards isn't anything I'd try with my .30-06 unless I had time and a VERY good prop.
Much less, a .30-505 at a mile off a backpack and with 50% throat erosion every time I touched the trigger

If you need to shoot past 300 yards you are a bad hunter.
I'd rather a .243 than a .300 for speed goats. If you want a new gun that's great, but talking about large caliber a like that for goats is trolling.

It's not uncommon for hunters to take longer shots if they have the caliber for it, 243 will work but I'd take a 308 before I take a 243

The new cartridges you propose would require at least a three foot barrel.

Don't the guys who hunt mountains take long shots regularly?
Posted on 5/21/16 at 8:48 am to Hammertime
Yes, but good luck finding pronghorns in the mountains.
And I seriously doubt anyone is hunting for them with a 30-378, .300 RUM., .300 wby mag, or the .30 nosler

And those who are probably aren't going "damn, if only I had a rifle that could land these 210gr bullets at 2800 yards I'd be filling the freezer twice as fast"
At what point do we start considering something to be light artillery?

I agree with bbvdd
You could make a kill shot on antelope out to 1000 with a 7 mag. 300 ultra is 'overkill'
Since you already have a 338, get a 7 mag

OP jus wanted to show off what he thinks he knows about loading and ballistics. Admittedly I know less than he does but this thread contains nothing of useful info other than he's a lonely gump looking to impress strangers on the Internet

Heck, he doesn't even need a 7mm mag. It's still too much gun. A 6mm, .25 or 6.5mm would be all he needs.
The 6mm or 6.5mm would be the best for ballistic coefficient (I.e. Long range shooting). That's all that would be needed for pronghorns anyway. They are not that big of an animal.
