Here

I got into it a few years ago - learned all about bow hunting from this board.

Mathews Z2 is the answer.

I type this from a ground blind looking at corn and bran 25 yards out.

There are so many different brands and models that do exactly the same thing. I'd start by searching which brands you might be interested in that are in your price range and then going and trying as many as possible.

Also, don't over-bow yourself. Poundage is overrated.

I got into bow hunting this season and started out with a Hoyt Powermax. I have liked it a lot so far. Have shot it once at a deer and killed a doe. Definitely worth a look.

If you start, get ready to be addicted! Go to a good bow shop and get fitted to make sure you have the correct draw length. You don't have to spend a ton to get started either. You can find a lot of used bows for very cheap on archerytalk.com in the forums. Honestly, these days, brands don't really matter anymore. There's so much technology driving the engineering of them, it all comes down to personal preference. I've shot several, and I just bought a new PSE Evolve before this hunting season. I've hunted and shot archery tournaments with Bowtech and Athens archery as well. Good luck with it. Also I highly recommend Jay James at Jay's Archery Supply. He's in Eunice. He's been working on my bows for over 10 years and one of the only people I trust to work on my bow.

1. Establish a budget as you can spend from $400 to $2500 on a rigged out bow.
2. Go to 4-5 reputable bowshops and ask questions, test drive various brands and models within your budget. Draw the bow and shoot several dozen arrows. Get use to the draw cycle, anchor point, and feel during release.
3. Buy what feels comfortable to YOU, don't buy based on your BFF's recommendation until after you have shot the bow(s) on your list.
4. Manufacturers design bows to chase speed (fps) and/or comfortability / smoothness. Shorter brace height bows are faster yet less forgiving. Longer brace height bows are generally smoother and a tad bit slower.
5. Speed (feet per second) is measured by IBO standards using a 30? draw length, 70 lb. draw weight, and 350 grain arrow. Unless your shooting the exact same specs above, you're bow will never achieve IBO fps. For example, the average person is a 28.5" draw length, shoots a 60-65 lbs bow, and arrows will weigh around 375 to 400 grains per inch. Bow companies promote speed because speed sells. They will publish and contend their bow shoots 345 fps based on IBO. In reality, the average hunter's bow will only achieve 305 fps when shooting a hunting arrow.

I'm in Laffy and if you need help I'll be glad to share my unbiased opinion. I've bowhunted for 25 yrs and have shot / owned practically every brand out there.

Nice! I'm not too far. Does he have a shop where I can try different bows? Of do I just bring him one after I purchase to have him tune it?

Go to a bow shop with the intention to shoot as many bows as possible. Do not plan on buying one. They all shoot a little differently. They all feel a little different. While cost is always a factor, you may find that a less expensive bow fits and shoots better in your hands than an uber expensive set up.

I have said for years that I was going to buy a new bow, but my old Mathews Switchback has never let me down. Can't bring myself to blow 1K on a new one when my old bow is rock steady.

Thanks! Exactly how I plan to approach it. Gives me confidence knowing others feel the same way.

Yep he has a good selection. He carries PSE, Hoyt, Bear, and one or two others if i'm not mistaken. He has budget bow packages all the way up to getting everything customized. I drive an hour to have him work on my bow, passing up two other shops in the process. He's that good. He'll take care of you.

Ouachita Parish

This board got me HOOKED on bow hunting - may never pick up a gun again.

The rush is unreal. I was sooo nervous I missed my first 3 bow shots. Heck, the first 8 point I had within 20 yards I was so nervous that I could not draw back the bow!

I love it....nothing else like it

Go see Brandon Cormier at Bayouland Bowhunters on Albertson Parkway in Broussard. Guy knows his stuff and will get you fitted properly. He is the #1 bow shop in the state.

Thanks. Broussard will be a little more difficult to do, but I'll give them a shot as well.
