I am a noob at this.

I know the upper and lowers can be purchased separate, but what is the best approach cost wise?

Anywhere from $550-4000. Really depends what you are looking for. If you want a plinker/truck gun you are in the lower range. If you want a high-performance warfighting AR, you can be looking around $1600-4000.

You can find a good one for under $1000 in 223/5.56. My 300 blackout was $1000. And most 308/7.62 AR's will be over $1000. The price range on AR's is huge like mentioned above. I don't see the need for an AR that cost over about $1,500. You can spend that and get a good gun. My friend shoots a m&p 15 in 223 and he likes it and I believe it was around $1000.

Smith & Wesson M&P Sport is a great starter and can be found in the $600 range.

If you work the sales and daily specials at Palmetto State Armory you can get one for $500 or just under.

Drizzt,

If you want a plinker, get a PSA upper and lower or M&P sport and customize as you like. If you want a little bit more serious, go for at least a Colt 6920. The Colt is around 1100.

What Pu said....

And then buy lots of 223/5.56 and lots of Pmags. Stack em deep.
Then enjoy the new lifelong addiction. Put money away weekly for future related purchases.

Warfighting versions are less than $500. Tacticool Mallfighter AR's are the expensive ones...

Correct it just needs to go bang every time and hit inside a 4"-6" circle at 100 yds to be considered milspec. Sub-moa accuracy isn't a military requirement for battle rifles.

I still have a hard time wrapping my head around that. The gov can spend billions on ships, planes etc but a precision rifle isn't a requirement. I haven't served but I find the acceptance of 4-6 moa kind of absurd when better accuracy can be had for not that much more money.

Most of it I think comes down to the fact the average grunt beats the tar out of his rifle. Dropped, jammed together after cleaning (if it can be called cleaning), jamming steel bore rods down the barrel when clearing from the range, etc.

Lots of good used deals on the facebook forums - not tax or paperwork...

This. I once watched a guy jam his BCG in backwards after cleaning.

From link above.

Chambered for .223 Wylde which accommodates Std .223 Remington as well as 5.56 NATO rounds

I must be doing it wrong, I've been shooting both of these in my rifle for years... It's plain ol' .223/5.56.

Although that is not a bad price for rifle, mag, and hard case.

5.56 chambers are safe with .223, just an accuracy penalty. Vice versa not quite so safe. Wylde chamber allows both with better accuracy.

Think about it this way: to get good with a rifle you need to shot probably 5000 rounds thru it.

The ammo will cost far more than the rifle, so why skimp on the rifle? Spikes is the cheapest combat-capable brand in my opinion.

Daniel Defense, Bravo Company & Colt are next, depending on what deal you can get.
