I've had the itch for a while, but need some pointers. What size does everyone have? Sit in or Sit on? How about a budget for a first one?

What's your budget? All of the ones I've had have been sit-on, you don't see a ton of sit-in fishing kayaks, not counting Native Ultimate or Jackson Kilroy but those are more considered hybrids.

Headed to BR next week to pick up a sit on Ascend FS12T. Runs about $600. Will be my 1st kayak, can always upgrade later if I get into it. Talked to several people and they pretty much recommended this one for a beginner. Will be used during hunting season aswell
Ascend FS12T

so why the 12'? What's the right size to get? I would like to spend no more than $1k for my first one.

Was told the 10' doesnt track well and the 14' is too big. The 12' is a happy medium. Theres more experienced members on here that can answer that and provide more advice. Polarpop might can chime in on this

There is/was a Jackson Cuda 12 on NOLA craigslist for $600, if still available I'd say jump on it.

LINK

The FS12T are decent for starters, the newer ones are supposed to be built a little stronger, still unsure if they've addressed the scupper leak issues.

Native ultimate is one fine hybrid. I switched to one over the Wilderness Systems Tarpon 120.

the 12 will be more stable than the 10'. I wouldn't get a 14 unless it was a PA. the 12 is heavy enough. As sonoma said, the Ascend FS12T is a popular starter kayak. Probably the best bang for the money.

12-14ft
Sit on top
Buy used
The accessories will add up, so don't blow your stack of cash all on the kayak

P&P is good people, if you're interested in a few boats give them a call and they'll bring them to a spot where you can demo them every Saturday.

$1000 will get you into something pretty nice, if you have a $1000 budget then I'd say skip the Ascend and go for a better brand/make, with it being winter deals can be had for used stuff. If you check with P&P they usually have a big selection of used/demo boats marked down. Don't mess with anything 10', the longer it is the better it'll track, 12' minimum but don't be afraid of 14'.

I agree, with a $1000 budget I'd skip the Ascend.

Hard to beat Backpacker in Baton Rouge for selection, knowledge and service after the sale. First class operation and some great folks there. Save yourself some time and just buy a Hobie. You'll eventually be in one.

Just to reiterate what has already been said multiple times. . .

12' seems to be the sweet spot for kayaks. . . the longer the kayak, the better the tracking. Usually the longer kayaks will have higher weight capacities as well. 12'would be the minimum size I'd look at, but they make several models longer than that (RIDE 135, ATAK, PA14, Ultimate just to name a few)

Used is best at your budget- looking at the list posted above, I would look into the Native Slayer 14.5 that Masseys has for $550. That would get you a great kayak (assuming it is in decent condition) and leave plenty of extra $ for accessories (Paddle, PFD, rod holders, anchor trolley, stake out pole, etc.)
Other notables on that list is the Ultimate FX12 for $850 and the Jackson Cuda 12, also for $850. (The aforementioned orange Cuda on CL would be the better deal if still available)

Are you a big guy? If so, the Big Rig @ $899 is a good kayak with a higher weight capacity and is a very stable fishing platform.

I've seen a few Gheenoes with nice outboards for not much more money. Just a thought.

My brother has a 13' Gheenoe with a 6hp or something in that range that he is trying to get rid of for $1k

He ended up getting a 1648 aluminum and doesnt use the Gheenoe any.
