Enough to run a 6.5 hp shop vac. I can't find the amp rating on the vac anywhere.

Doing a direct conversion says 6.5 hp is 4800 watts. No way it's that much.

How big of a generator do I need?

It will be a Honda.

Just get a 6500. You will probably use it for other things down the line anyway

is this a standard shop vac or a commercial unit? some of them exagerate a bit. if regular, more than likely 12 or 15 amp motor.

The vac probably doesn't draw that much power continuously, but electric motors draw peak amperage at motor start.

I just did some searching and it is indeed 6.5 PEAK HP. This gives you a peak amperage of right about 45 amps.

Now, when I look deeper into the 6.5HP Shop-vac, it says that it has a 9.5 amp motor. It seems like there is some dubious use of HP on these vacuums...

Seriously, see if you can find an amperage rating on it. That is FAR more useful here. HP is pretty nonsensical for a shopvac.

Okay, so I went to shopvac's website. All of their 6.5 Peak HP vacuums have an electrical rating of:

120 VAC
60 Hz
12 Amps

That comes out to 1440 watts or about 2 HP of actual performance. The 6.5 HP is snake oil.

I have a Rigid wet vac. Sticker says 3.5hp @9 amps. Used a Honda 1000 after Hurricane Isaac with no problems. Honda website says 8.3 amps max. I would get the 2000.

Honda 2200i will power it fine. 6600 is way overkill unless you would need to plug in some additional items.
