Why in the frick is Brad Pitt's character, an AMERICAN tank commander, armed with a Sturmgewehr 44, a GERMAN machine gun which has widely been regarded as worthless piece of shite?

All I am wanting is some good talk about WW2 German machine guns, is all. If I can't get it from the good folks of this board, I probably can't get it anywhere else.

Just probably ripped it off a dead nazi officer's rotting corpse.

Great movie though nonetheless, very dark side.

I just thought it was really stupid that he was armed with a Sturmgewehr when American tank commanders were normally outfitted with the tommy gun and the crew armed with the greasers. I know it's just a movie and all but I like authenticity in my films. I know I'm not alone in this.

You'll have to explain that one to me.

The only things I know about the StG 44 is that it had a relatively low rate of fire, was better in close quarters, and it came too late in the war to really have a positive effect for the Germans.

Didn't it's design pretty much give birth to the entire class of weapons known as "assault rifles"? Pretty sure I read somewhere that it inspired the AK-47.

My take on this is that he doesn't have a lot of ammo for it. It's a 7.92. And there were not a lot of those around due to the fact that they were very fragile weapons. If you leaned them over in the corner and they fell over there was a good chance that the firing pin would break.

Guessing he just picked it up and liked it.

Of course we know its a pos now, but maybe the feeling then was different.

There were plenty of GI's that picked up MP-40s and used them in combat. I guess it's all in what you like.
