Friend of mine’s lease is overrun with wild hogs. They have tried trapping them but bear goes in the trap and eats all the bait. They work so they can’t stay out all nights trying to shoot hogs to get rid of them.
Another guy I know has a camp at Tensas, bear broke window, got in camp and did some serious damage.
Bears have been seen within a couple of miles of my house and property, hope they stay away.I don’t understand why our government overlords decided we needed bears in Louisiana but we have them, want them or not.
Gov’t spent a metric ton of money building up the population of bears in Louisiana, buying property to connect Tensas area with the Atchafalaya basin and transplanting bears from up north.
Personally,it pisses me off.I think bears are fine in wilderness areas, but we don’t need them in our area.

“Bears belong.Pigs do not.”
Trapping wild hogs is the only viable way to control their population.Having bears on a property eliminates any chance of trapping the hogs.

I love watching them from far away, but if Mississippi ever gets as many bears that Alaska has I'll move. I've never felt more uncomfortable in the woods than I did in Alaska.

Planted all that area back to trees which is good for your kids and grandkids.

Meanwhile giant deer are being killed there while the forest matures

My lease is inside the MS levee system. It floods nearly every spring and wildlife obviously has to evacuate. For some reason hogs don’t proliferate. Everything else seems to come back. Including bear. We see or catch a pig on camera here and there, but nothing like I see from others. I’ve had a few encounters with bear. Some guys have a feeder knocked down on occasion by bear. I’ve never seen them as a problem really. They don’t seem to affect the deer population

What? They eat wood shoot houses, too? Is there a flavor they like in the wood or just the human scent?

That's a bowl with thick vegetation around it you can't see. We have huge areas with thick mesquite, high plateaus, grass, etc.. We have mountains about 6-8 miles away and the bears come down in the fall and winter to feed. Feral pigs showed up 3 years ago. Yes, pigs.

We have lots of deer, bears, mountain lions, etc... Here are some photos. [/img] [/img]

They like pressure treated lumber the best. They’ve eaten halfway through a 4x4 leg of one of our shoot houses.

Yea it’s mainly the treated wood, not sure what it is they like about it. I build metal bases with painted t1-11 for sides. Haven’t had any issues yet.

Ironically in the north east their black bears are aggressive. Down here they aren't.

You are exactly right. Coons and bears are closely related. Coons are NOT rodents like squirrels. A bear is like a 400lb coon!

That is crazy. I would think the chemicals used to protect the wood would be harmful, but I guess not.

bears are good eating

A friend of mine had a bear roast and cooked a Mississippi pot roast with it in a pressure cooker, and it’s the best wild game I’ve ever eaten.
Ive hunted Sherburne since I was a kid and I’ve never seen a bear there, but my cousin has seen them. Lasportsman had a picture that my cousin took of a bear under his stand in 2011. I’d take bears over hogs out there any day! That place is overrun with hogs.

Until you’ve spent time around Tensas, you won’t believe the population size we have. On one trip over a while back, I saw 8 bears in less than 24 hours. Basically, one afternoon and one morning.
They eat feeders. I don’t care about that. They eat wood shoot houses. That sucks.

This... I hunt Tensas and the bears are a pain in the arse. It's gotten to where you can't feed off-season because the bears will hang out under the protein feeder and the deer won't come around.. And for those that think they won't eat soybeans, think again.
