My 74 year old “neighbor” firmly believes that as long as he isn’t taking deer beyond the allowed limit and isn’t violating baiting/spotting laws or hunting out of season, he shouldn’t be forced to get permission from the state to take a deer on his own property.

I tend to agree with him. Hunting public land is one thing and in theory a license helps to fund the conservation of that land and its resources.

Curious what the board thinks about this.

He may own the land.

He doesn’t own the deer.

Why would he be concerned about some of the game laws but not the most basic one…..the one that allows the LDWF to operate?

How many 74 yr olds have you ever been successful arguing with??
I agree with his premise though.

Maybe if he had a high fence around his entire property where nothing could come or go that wasn’t already inside his fence. Kind of like a stocked pond on his property.

But short of that, all those deer on his property come and go and don’t belong to him. The deer he shoots on his property may have originally come from a piece of public land a few miles away that license fees pay for.

In MS it is legal to hunt without a license on land deeded in your name, so he’s not alone. Seems fair enough to me, he’s paying taxes on the property.

He views the other laws as being directly beneficial to the deer population and other hunters. He loathes the idea of another tax just to operate on his own land.

State deer. Lmmfao

How many people hit deer on the road?
How many times does the state step up and say " oops our deer, let us help you with that".

Is Louisiana not like that? Alabama and Tennessee are.

I’m in NC. You’re supposed to have a landowner permit which is just another form of a license.

This is what sucks as a Louisiana resident who owns land is MS. $500 a yr is a lot. I wish they had a non resident lifetime.

I pay it too, but if owning a 1/4 acre anywhere in the state gave you a resident license everyone would do it. States like Kansas and Iowa are another step further, you’re not guaranteed tags just because you own land.

I don’t think that is what he is talking about, think he talking about hunting on land that he owns , and I fully agree a non resident should be able to hunt on land he owns without having to purchase a NR license

Not if you’re not a resident of MS.

ETA: many states have an age limit. May want to check and see about that. I think it’s 70 in MS.

It’s 65

quote:

License Requirements
Resident - Each resident of the State of Mississippi ages sixteen (16) to sixty-four (64), must obtain a hunting license, except while hunting on lands titled in his name. Any person sixty-five (65) or older, or any person otherwise exempted from obtaining a hunting license, must have documentation with him/her at all times while hunting as described in #3 (Exemptions). [MS. Code 49-7-5]
Non-Resident - All non-resident hunters, except minors under the age of sixteen (16), are required to obtain a hunting license while hunting in the State of Mississippi.

Setting the legal precedent that the landowner owns the wild animals on his land is a slippery slope. Should he then also be allowed to hunt at night? Kill over the limit? Shoot protected species?

He said neighbor so I figured the guy lived there, sucks if you own a large piece of land and are paying a big tax bill and an out of state fee, but I do understand not being able to buy resident status with a tiny lot, it would be abused to no end.

This is what I’m saying. I just wanna hunt my land. The rule should say non residents can hunt their land without a license. They must get a non resident license to hunt anywhere that is not their own. Same rules and regs apply as normal.

I bought my lifetime LA license back in September knowing I would be moving to Texas.

Should have bought one when I moved to Louisiana 12 years ago because I think I paid around $100 for the sportsman or close to it for 12 years. Also been paying $315 for the Texas out of state for the same time. Probably close to $500 a year to hunt both states after duck stamp, bow stamps, gator helper license and such.

I think in state Texas super combo was $68 last time I checked and lifetime may be $1800 so not sure if that’s worth it being 42 years old.
