Hunting Cougar/Bear/Bobcat/Coyote/etc

What all does one get from killing these animals? IE... can you eat the meat? Or are they basically just killed for the thrill/fur/head mounted on the wall?
Just curious as I've always remembered my uncle(science teacher) saying "Humans eat animals that don't eat animals" and it always sort of stuck with me.
So, can you eat the meat of these animals, or does it taste like crap?

You can eat Cougar, Bear and Bobcat but I've heard Coyote tastes like shite.
These animals are mainly killed for the skin and what's wrong with that? Do you eat rats and cockroaches?

Honnestly, I kill coyotes and bobcats because they kill deer and turkey. I know it's the circle of life but I'm greedy

Your Uncle's saying it a bit flawed.
Fish eat other fish, some ducks eat fish, and a pig will eat damn near anything that doesn't eat it first.
But I understand what he was trying to say. Bear is suppose to be pretty good but I haven't had one so I can't say for sure.
I will shoot a coyote because they aren't native to the south and can destroy a quail and turkey population.

I don't get this, several animals are responsible for killing turkeys-and if coyotes are catching deer wouldn't that be a good thing? Culling weak animals is what should happen

If you don't get this then you are on the wrong board. A fawn is a weak animal?
Bobcats can kill full grown healthy deer and will put the hurt on a turkey population.

Hogs are much worse. They will eat entire turkey nests. A healthy population of naturally occuring apex predators is a sign of a viable eco-system. Are you ready for jaguars South Louisiana?

I have no problem killing Coyotes because there are a ton of them but the only way I would ever kill a Cougar/Bear/Bobcat is if I was in danger. These are truly powerful and majestic animals that have been almost hunted out in the whole southern part of the country. I would feel like shite for depleting an already almost non-existant population.

Amen to that.

You mean like mascots for another team?
Jags would be interesting though....If you could ever photograph one in La. it would be worth thousands.
To answer the OP's question;
bear has been eaten in the southeast US for thousands of years, mostly for oil/organs though. I've heard of people eating cougar, but it's a bragging/bushmeat thing...kind of like eating 'lion burgers'...it's actually pretty depressing if you think about it.
Bobcat? Um, no thanks, but then again some people like cat.
Coyote? If you eat this, you are more manly than me, cause I'm not touching it.
I'm curious about armadillos, since we are now inundated with them. My dog gives it a thumbs up.

Some things just need killin. I've never killed a bear or cougar but have sealed the fate of many a pesky coyote and bobcat.

I pretty much agree with this. I would definitely hunt coyotes and maybe a bear(just once, to say I've done it), but I don't ever think I could shoot a cougar.
As a child I was always pissed that Africa had all the cool animals while we had squirrels. When I finally learned about Cougars/Jags/Bobcats/etc in America, I was quite thrilled.
But yeah, Cougars seem so powerful/badass, I think I'd feel pretty bad about myself for shooting one(unless it was stalking me).

We had even cooler ones, but you and I were born 20,000 years to late.

Bobcats eat deer and turkey to survive. We don't. I have no problem thinning out predator populations, mainly feral and exotic animals such as hogs, dogs, coyotes, and housecats, as they do a heck of a lot more damage to the ecosystem than bobcats. But to kill these animals because they take a few game animals is ridiculous.

Yes.

Yeah, but they've basically filled the niche left by the extirpation of red wolves. The only thing stopping the coyote from invading Europe is the Atlantic Ocean. Ha ha.

Very true, the lack of apex predators in an ecosystem will cause lots of unpredictable changes. I suggest the book "Where the Wild Things Were" by William Stolzenburg, a good read on the subject.

I have no desire to kill a bear or cougar, but I do shoot coyotes and bobcats. I hunt on a cattle ranch and shoot the predators at the ranchers orders. He has had several calves killed by coyotes and bobcats.
I have no problem shooting them as they also prey on whitetail fawns.
I think people that hunt bear and cougar are similar to the people that go on African safaris and shoot zebras and cape buffalo. Their is no benefit to it IMO, but I guess they do it "for the thrill of the hunt."

I will shoot a coyote as they are non-native.
I will not shoot a bobcat. Someone said a bobcat will kill a full grown deer . . . yeah, right.
I also won't shoot a fox, cougar or bear.

Yeah, I'm really not sure if I'd be able to go through with killing a bear. They just look too innocent/harmless.
Now, if one was standing up snarling at me... I'd feel pretty good about taking the shot.

I have acquaintances that shoot bear and eat the meat. Bear sausage. I don't like the taste but if they are using the whole animal I certainly have no problem with it.
