I belong to a hunting club that has a campsite where people have there own camps. A couple years ago the camp skinning rack fell apart, and the members started using a personal skinning rack connected to one of the older member's camp. He didn't mind because he was never there. This past year bought that camp from the older member, and have been debating on whether to put a lock on the skinning rack and making it completely private again.

Is that an a-hole move as it's been the camp skinning rack for the past two years, or is that fine as I now own the camp that the rack is connected to?

You should move your rack to the community spot.

It's cemented into the ground and can't be moved.

You should donate your rack to the camp and tell the other members it’s their job to move it to a communal spot. With the understanding that if the camp ever gets sold or dissolved you have first rights to take the rack with you.

I agree with the others. Precedent has been set for 2 years and hard feelings will result if you make it private. However another option is that you resurrect the camp skinning rack and then you could keep yours private if you wish

How big is the camp and how many deer do y’all kill a season?

We kill around 20 deer per year and have two private racks and one camp rack. The two private ones are covered carports. I like to have my own as it’s right by my camp. Easy to get another knife, another beer, etc

If they want to use a tractor to rip it out the ground and re-cement it somewhere else I'd be fine with that. I'm just tired of there constantly being blood all over the ground right outside my camp. It's smells and attracts way to many bugs/creatures to my camp.

That's what I don't want.

However I don't believe it's my job to provide a rack for everyone else to use. For the 19 other members who don't have a rack, I don't see why they can't fix the old rack or replace it.

19 members is too many to have right skinning right at your camp.

Then they're the ones with the poor etiquette, that's like using someone's private boat launch and dumping the boat trash bin next to the ramp. If they want to use it I'd set some ground rules

For the short term, buy some cat litter for the blood. For no later than next season, lead the charge for a new skinning rack.

That's most likely what I will do. Just will be a pain in the arse for the current year.

We usually shoot around 40 deer and over 60 hogs a year.

Just annoying to me that with a 20 member camp, a replacement skinning rack could be had for $15 a person, yet I would seem like the a-hole for making the rack connected to my camp private.

Be honest and tell them 19 people worth of mess is getting to be too much, and you’re asking that they rebuild the camp rack or clean up their mess completely by using a good sealed gut bucket.

If there’s a grown man that would take offense to that, I wouldn’t want to share a club with him.

You're part of the camp too. Start a game plan with the other members to build a new camp skinning area.

How hard is it for 19 grown men to put a piece of drill pipe between 2 trees with a pulley and a hand winch?

I did it myself for about $40 in parts and 2 hours labor.

Just be upfront and start the collection pot for the new rack. You’ve listed some valid reasons, imo. Good luck.

For time being, could they clean all animals over a big gut bucket? Might help reduce blood on the ground. That’s way too many animals to be cleaned right at your camp though. I wouldn’t expect many hard feelings if you explain why and give everyone ample notice and time to put up a camp rack.

If it were me I’d approach the other “private rack” owners and innocently ask if everyone can use their racks too like they have yours. If they say no, ask them if they think it impropriety if you too were to limit your rack to personal use just like they do. That gives you 2-3+ Support.

But also remember that if the others with no personal rack build a camp rack and you don’t contribute then don’t ask to use the “camp” rack. Offer to contribute o the camp rack even though you have one.

The best stories and reminiscing is usually done at the skinning rack. I would leave it like it is.

At our camp we discuss these things together, EVERYONE that uses the skinning rack needs to pitch in with money and time to redo the rack.
