saw one hovering outside my backyard window today in BR...didn't know they hung around in this cold...started to rehang my feeder, but remembered it would likely freeze

It was probably too weak to fly the distance. I found a dead one in my shed once when I lived in Pearl River, LA.

Lots of hummers overwinter in La
Dead hummer usually means they got spoiled drink from a feeder or a cat killed them

I have two juvenile rufous hummingbirds wintering in my overgrown azaleas. The feeders have been freezing up the past two nights so I keep one inside and bring it out when the other freezes. Constant rotation. They are feeding like crazy in this cold weather. Please put your feeders out if you see them.

Along I-10 and below has been holding them for many years. All over the La. Bird pages. Hell, there's a Rufous in Ellic right now. I've never managed to keep one past October.

The old, sick and young stay behind off of instinct.

This was last year during the major snow in Baton Rouge. They hang around.

I see them year round in my yard. I have several purple salvia plants that grow to 4’ tall (more like a bush) and they love the flowers. It is my understanding that not all hummingbirds migrate and some will stay in the area.
