I bought a four-wheeler several years ago. I never got the title transferred to my name. I'm getting ready to sell it, so I guess I should get it put in my name so the next owner won't have any problems. I have the original title and the bill of sale.

Can I get this done at a notary or something? Or am I stuck going to the dreadful DMV?

What state are you in? Because you definitely don't need an ATV title in Louisiana.

Yes you do. It was a pain in the arse selling my atv with out the title. First thing buyers asked about was the title.

While they may have asked for a title, it wouldn't do them any good either.

Yes. Just pay the money for your peace of mind and to complete the sale.

Four wheelers don't have license plates, so why would a person need a title? Who's going to ask to see it?

I don't have a title on my present one, and owned several before this one, never had a title on any of them, sold them without any problems.
Same goes for dirt bikes, streetbikes are a different matter though.

I believe if you're wanting to insure one the title has to be in your name, also some of the state run parks I believe require a registration sticker which is only available if you have a title. Also, some people just want them for piece of mind to know they're not buying something stolen or with a bank lein on it. It'll depend person to person though. Usually if it's ~10 years old or so I don't care, if it's fairly newish, one-owner situations then no title usually makes me think it's probably still being financed.

ETA: If you don't feel liking going get the title swapped, waiting for it to come in the mail, etc you can do a bill of sale, then sign the title over to the purchaser. If he goes register it he'll have to do what's called a double transfer.

this & maybe a copy of the buyers DL. I've sold 3 bikes this way. You can pull a standard form bill od sale by doing a quick google search.
