Well my philosophy is: the heck with the future buck, if she goes into heat we've got a this years buck. Besides, we have plenty does running around.

Why do hunters shoot a doe late in the season when there is a good chance she is has gotten the peen and is now with child. Wouldn't it be better to get em out the way before?
So that either way she doesn't have a fawn?

Yeah I mean either way you're hurting the herd getting rid of her. It's rather or not you'd like to limit the does that can breed to living does or does that breed and die. I'd rather have my breeders living all season and kill them after.

Shooting does hurts the herd? Is there some part of this I missed? I know of no place that shoots enough does.

I simply do not understand what you're saying here. Shoot them after what?

what he doesn't understand is killing does after they have already been fertilized.

during the rut, they are bait. afterward, they are useless. you'd never be able to kill all the does that got knocked up. you aren't hurting your herd, you're helping it.

It's not just about the doe or the trophy. I can't justify shooting a doe after the rut because you shoot one and possible kill 3.

This makes no sense.

It does make since. It's also just my opinion. I shoot does as early as possible. After they have been "fertilized" they could possibly be carrying 2 fawns. So in turn you kill 3. Again, just my opinion. However if someone chooses to shoot their does late its not like they are going to hurt the population.

Is it safe to assume every fertile doe gets impregnated?

If so I'm with you guys, you can never shoot enough does. Other than yearling does, most will have twins, if you killed half the does on an area, the population would keep the current levels. No way you end up killing half of them anyway.

I don't think you can assume every fertile doe gets impregnated. This is just the way I choose to hunt. I agree with you, even if one chooses to take all their does after the rut I still don't think it will hurt the population.

I guess I'v also found I can hunt for a buck and be more patient if I know I already have one or two in the freezer.

Killed a doe after about 15 but I was holding out for buck. Finally couldn't take it anymore and popped a nanny

This is the reason I shoot a yearling over a mature doe. They can only have 1 offspring the following year vs a mature doe having 2 or in some cases 3.

Back to the OP's question. I shoot a deer every 2-3 yrs.
Last year I shot 3. Two does for jerky meat and a friend.
Typically between my brother, dad and myself we have more than enough meat and I dont like to waste it.

1.3 hunts per shot opp. I could prolly shoot a deer everyday and most times shoot multiple deer/hunt. How often do I shoot? About 8 hunts per shot. Prolly more than that.

Looking at the OP, I would have to say that it varied throughout the season. Probably the first 4 weeks I would have to say that I had the opportunity to kill at least every 2 out of 3 or at the least every other hunt. Sometimes I'll go the first 3 weeks and have an opportunity to kill every time I get on a stand. That's pretty damn good, especially for the hills. Later in the season is a different story though. This late in the season it's like those little bastards have climbed in a hole.

Im sure I would average multiple kill chances per hunt. We have a lot of deer on my property. The begining of this year has been the worst year in a while and it was probably 5 hunts that I didnt see a deer. last year it may have been 3-4 hunts all year that I didnt see a deer.

we dont kill enough deer. 1700 acres and 8 guys. I said i was going on a rampage this year and taking out plenty does, but I havent had the time to get up there.

we've al shot multiple deer this year and have brought guests who have shot multiple. between us all we've killed about 35 deer this year and its not enough.
