Tripp3,
You have any luck this morning? One guy hunting with us missed a doe about 200 yards out. Nobody else saw anything else. We killed a couple this weekend. Been slow for the most part.

Is it safe to assume every fertile doe gets impregnated?
If so I'm with you guys, you can never shoot enough does. Other than yearling does, most will have twins, if you killed half the does on an area, the population would keep the current levels. No way you end up killing half of them anyway.
I don't think you can assume every fertile doe gets impregnated. This is just the way I choose to hunt. I agree with you, even if one chooses to take all their does after the rut I still don't think it will hurt the population.
I guess I'v also found I can hunt for a buck and be more patient if I know I already have one or two in the freezer.

This makes no sense.
It does make since. It's also just my opinion. I shoot does as early as possible. After they have been "fertilized" they could possibly be carrying 2 fawns. So in turn you kill 3. Again, just my opinion. However if someone chooses to shoot their does late its not like they are going to hurt the population.

Well my philosophy is: the heck with the future buck, if she goes into heat we've got a this years buck. Besides, we have plenty does running around.
It's not just about the doe or the trophy. I can't justify shooting a doe after the rut because you shoot one and possible kill 3.

I read on here a while back that the .35 whelen would be legalized next year in La
Does anyone know if there is a difference in the .35whelen and the .35remington?
I have a Marlin lever action .35remington my grandfather gave me. I just explain it as a 30-30 on roide! It's an awesome round.

Just because of freezer space or amount you consume?
I shoot 3 to 4 deer a year. We eat 3 to 4 deer a year. I don't shoot more then I eat or if someone I know whats one, and I know they will eat it, I will shoot them one. If we ate more I would buy another freezer. I can kill, I would say on average, every 10 to 12 hunts.

Yeah I did. Needed a good laugh.
In all seriousness. I love some of the hunting and fishing talk on here. Get some pretty good ideas and able to see whats going on in different parts of the state.
I can do without all the other BS but to each his own.

This is the plan. I usually get down for an hour or 2 and eat lunch and nap but wont be gone long if I do get down.
Are they in full rut? My brother-in-law saw a few bucks chasing last week.

That's funny. True statement though.
So glad you guys think about me at night. I can't lie though I was suppose to be Christmas shopping with my wife last night and could not get off the OB. It is addicting.

Totally agree. I have mentioned this in another thread. Its been pretty ridiculous in here the last week or 2.
Anyways, I'v also mentioned a time or 2 I am going to hunt in MS(somewhere about 20 miles just east of Brookhaven) for 4 days starting on Saturday. I'm pretty excited.
Can anyone give any good reports for this area?

To top it all off the rut should be in full swing in central Mississippi.
Where exactly in Central Mississippi? Starting Saturday I will be hunting in Monticello, MS for 4 days. I'v heard a couple of people say they should be in rut. First time in MS hunting and I'm pretty pumped.

That gun is capable of shooting much better than that. If you'd like to get the groups smaller you may want to try some different bullets.
2" is plenty good enough for deer hunting though.
Oh yes I am sure the gun is capable of much better shooting and as you mentioned different ammo and better glass would help. Also a better shooter would help. I am by no means, nor claim to be, a great shot, but it definitely gets the job done.

Yes it is. Shop around good before you buy one. I have the handi-rifle and love it. The single shot is very accurate too(zero moving parts). I put 3 shots in a 2 inch group at 100 yards a couple weeks ago. That's not bad for a big round like that.

I love my 45-70. I don't know much about the .444. U are right u can get a handi-rifle for about 269 and I got a Nikon Prostaff for 99 bucks last Christmas. When I got mine I used it for 2 straight years befor I picked up another rifle.
re: .444 Marlin or 45-70?

Hornady came out with a 45-70 round that is something like a 225 grain bullet apposed to the 325 grain bullet. This should have a little less recoil and add some more distance capability. I haven't seen them in stores this year but should be coming out soon(they are on the Hornady website). The 45-70 will be awesome with less recoil and the smae bolistic capability.

If this thread was intended for real conversation I'm headed to MS to hunt for the first time. My brother-in-law joined a lease this year. Really looking forward to being in MS and hunting hard for 4 days starting on Saturday. I hope to see some deer and hopefully get a shot at a decent buck.
If this is just going to turn into an OT type thread then forget it.
