Depends on the person and not merely age. I'm 21 and I can count on one hand the does I've ever shot(3). I've just been blessed to hunt some really good land with my dad and have never shot anything under my 7pt last season.

Two year ago I hunted six times. Killed two does.
Last year I hunted 20 times, saw nothing. It really depends on where you are hunting and what you want to shoot.

That's not entirely true. People in Clinton drop anything that walks and shoot 5 deer a season on average(from the people I know). They still see deer, and even decent looking bucks.

I know many people from St. James Parish that would drop all 6 every year, and there's always reports of deer in that WMA.

The regulations and data have to take into account if people would limit out.

Same reason wood duck limit raised this year. (IMO ~ I have no stats to back this claim)

location and management guidelines are key variables to this question.

Of the 6 guys on our lease only 4 deer died last year. I killed 3 of them but only intended on killing two (thought I shot same buck twice)

This year no deer have been taken so far.

Other posters who have been here and seen the game pics will attest that I have good deer. Getting them in front of a weapon is a different story though.

What? I indicated years hunted not years old.

A 46 year old hunting for the first time IS a young hunter.

A 26 year old on his 10th season is an older hunter.

Depends on what kind of hunter you are. I have the opportunity to shoot a doe 90+% of the time. Then it drops for small bucks, then a little more for bucks that need another year or two, then it drops drastically for a mature buck. Maybe see a mature buck 10% of the hunts.

I could kill 6 a year on most places I've hunted. It's just not what I want to do. No point in shooting 3 does a year when they don't excite me.

I agree, but the percentage of those I shoot is probably 25% at best, which is still very good.

You guys don't try to limit out all 6 a year?
most leases won't allow you to shoot 6 deer and if yours does you may want to find a different one

Just because of freezer space or amount you consume?

I shoot 3 to 4 deer a year. We eat 3 to 4 deer a year. I don't shoot more then I eat or if someone I know whats one, and I know they will eat it, I will shoot them one. If we ate more I would buy another freezer. I can kill, I would say on average, every 10 to 12 hunts.

We see a lot of deer at our lease and let most walk. Seldom is the hunt where no deer are seen. I let does walk in the hope they soon go into heat (until last week of the season). I wait for a big rack. We limit our 6 members to 1 big rack plus a spike (or 2 spikes)and does depending on our number of doe tags. We've seen and killed more deer this year than ever before since we got rid of some poachers.

We typically get 15 to 20 doe tags but only 9 this year due to the drought.

In summary, hunts per shot opportunity is less than 2, but hunts per actual shot is at least 5.

Question: Why do hunters shoot a doe late in the season when there is a good chance she is has gotten the peen and is now with child. Wouldn't it be better to get em out the way before?

(There are pro's and con's to both)

Only value in a doe worth more than meat,
is if she's still alive and in heat.

And that rymes.

I've seen and killed many fine bucks chasing a doe in heat. They got that magic ya know.

One thing I've learned: If you seee a buck after a doe in heat, there's always another, bigger buck lurking nearby. And I mean always.

i dont know and cant really follow the other logic. I kill does early in the year, because to me it seems if i kill one later in the year, i may also be killing a future trophy buck

If I don't have enough meat after the rut I'll shoot the yearling and let the bred doe walk.

All our does on my dads land have to be shot during bow season. After that they are reserved for any children he decides to bring. I haven't even been hunting this year and the old man won't let me go drop a doe.
