How long should I give my citrus trees to see if they survived the winter freeze?

I had them covered for the second, longer freeze, but wasn't able to get them covered for the first, shorter freeze.

They lost all their leaves, but I read that this doesn't mean that they're dead. They are pretty young, but hoping that they're just mature enough to pull through.

About what point should I give up on them if they're truly dead? Late March? Any pointers?

Scrape a branch with the back side of your pocketknife gently. If see green, it is still alive. Fertilize it. Mine lost all leaves and are now putting on new leaves.

scratch the top of the main branch wity fingernail, if green you are probably okay. If not go down an inch and scractch again, and so on. You can tell what you lost

Thanks, everyone! I'll try that out this weekend. Is it too early to fertilize with Trip 13? Or do you think it needs it at this point?

My Blood orange tree lost every leaf on it. This past weekend I went out back to trim the excess branches and it was sprouting new baby leaves. I went ahead and trimmed it anyway. The Hamlin orange tree lost all leaves but still had some oranges on it and it was sprouting new leaves as well. . I shook the tree to get as many as I could to fall but some stayed on. These trees are a good twelve feet tall.
I guessed they survived afterall.

Should I prune back to the green if tips are dead?

I may have lost 5 trees

Give 'em time and they will probably come back and sprout new growth soon. I trimmed mine because I had that planned whether we had that freeze or not.

Mine last all leaves, but yesterday I looked at them and now see green growth. I going to wait before cutting them back a couple weeks. They are about 10 years old.

Where are you? A buddy in NOLA said his navels are showing signs of life.

They were put in the ground last year, but they were a pretty good size.

I’m in BR. My Blood Orange tree hasn’t even born fruit yet, it’s that young. That’s why I’m worried they weren’t mature enough to survived. I haven’t inspected them closely since the warmer weather yet, though.

I will this weekend. Hoping for the best!

we may have lost our beloved lemon tree and our naval orange tree they say wait till April and look for green and cut off dead. Looked at the lemon tree today and noticed some green branches but none on the orange yet.

Pretty sure I lost mine. The remaining fruit shriveled up and all leaves feel off. It looks terrible.
It was a BIG Satsuma that had lasted several cold snaps.

My very mature satsuma also lost its leaves. I wouldn’t count the big girls out yet. I think more concern should be for the smaller trees. Good luck

I would go ahead and chop them down. Why procrastinate?

I recently read that you should wait to prune freeze damaged trees until June.

Mine lost most of their leaves but the stems were still green. In the last week the new leaves have started to make their appearance and are coming on strong in the last couple of days. If you don't see anything within a month they are probably toast.
