Yea i tried that once, but he thought it was play time and started to mess around with the wrong dog. I had to put him back in the truck for the rest of the day.

Just fyi,I was referring to training for duck hunting. Not too many pheasants to shoot at around here...

Ah well in that case I do know the trick for training up land dogs to retrieve. Get in a long hall way with all the doors closed and a tennis ball. Have some treats ready. Throw to the end if the hall. Let the dog get it, she will only have one way to go and thats a retrieve pattern. When she gets to the area of the ball say "dead bird" and let her bring it back. Once she gets there make her sit and say "drop" as she drops it give her a treat. Do this 15 minutes a time a couple of times a day. Don't throw the ball outside with her for a couple of weeks.

Six months the first time, then home for hunting season, then back for another round until he got his HRch.

The only thing I know about upland dogs is that you can train them by running them with more experienced dogs.

Me and my old man (mostly my old man) have trained all of his/my dogs ourselves. Cow dogs, retrievers, squirrel dogs, blood dogs, bird dogs, and pretty much everything else except a house dog. My dogs are constantly at hunting school.

One thing that everyone I am sure you all know but I will say anyway is that you will still need to work you dog a good bit when.she gets back. I trained my own, but when I was "done" I still found I needed to work her in the off season 2 or 3 days a week.

The old man has more tolerance than he used to, he did give him a warning first…

Personally my opinion is if you don't have time to train a dog, you don't have time to care for or maintain a dog....

But I also love grabbing a ribbon at a hunt test or winning at a trial...,

With a dog WE trained......

Lil choupique agrees....

Mine went for 2 months. Steve did force fetch and that was it. I've done the rest. From water force to hand signals. All he needs is 2 more run in seasoned and then it's off to finished. He will be 2 in June. I wouldn't trade the way I did it. It brings more enjoyment when he does good at hunt test.

My father and I have never sent one of our dogs to training school, I've honestly only mentioned twice until now..

We got Llewellian English Setters, so it pretty natural to them

its my understanding that he will be able to complete triple retrieves when I get him back, and I will have to take it from there. I have been doing alot of reasearch on training, and I started him on the guide line from the book "Water Dog" with his puppy training, like I mentioned earlier He was doing well when I dropped him off( but has struggled a bit with force fetch), so I plan on following that to complete his jedi training.

Dont do it man.

Dont punish him for being good at what you want him to do.
