I use a 20 ga full choke with #6 hi-brass in the early season, and do alot of sitting and stalking. More sitting and not moving to wait them out. I sneak into a good spot before daybreak, and wait for them to start moving. Later in the season, with fewer leaves on the trees I will use the .17HMR, but only with the FMJ bullet, as the hollow points and ballistic tips tear up the meat.

I've tried steel shot as required in the NWRs, but that is terrible on squirrels. Seems not to penetrate and just breaks bones. Lots of cripples, or stunned, that take off when they hit the ground.

Once the leaves are off the trees, dogs are the most fun way.

I usually sneak around with my .22 and pop em. Sometimes I bring my .410 (when I get real pissed I bring my 16 and blow em away). A good oak tree is the key to a good squirrel hunt.

ETA: Anything other than a .22 or less is cheating for a grown man. Head shots only.

I think that gun would carry a little far if you firing up into the trees.

Your southern squirrels are much smarter than ones up here. I can sit in my tree stand while deer hunting and have a field day on ones just running across the ground.

I think you'll find that it is a different game once you get out of your deer stand.

I always see swarms of squirrels on the deer stand. When I'm hunting them they're nowhere to be seen.

I've even hunted them out of a boat. We crept along, and whenever we saw one in a tree we'd slow down, creep up, and boom their arse! Actually pretty damn fun!

North Alabama, or anything above Tuscaloosa/Montgomery will have the Orange Fox Squirrels. You get south of Montgomery and they are black with a white nose/face.

I use a Judge when I squirrel hunt.

What are the advantages of hunting them with dogs? Do they just sit on a branch waiting for you to blast them, or do they immediately get in a hole when they're treed?

One of life's true joys is squirrel hunting w/ a good squirrel dog! We usually have a party of at least 3 hunters, but freuquently 4-6. A good selection of guns is important. A bolt action 17 Mach 2 and/or 22 LR for sniping situations, a semi-auto 22 LR to assist on sniping or running squirrels and shotguns for running squirrels, finishing off wounded squirrels or shooting a nest (usually kept to a minimum). Things can get really exciting if the dogs tree at different trees or tree multiple squirrels at the same tree. Squirrel hunting w/ a dog is kinda like quail hunting as it's a good bit social event. No need to be quiet. Great way to teach kids to hunt. Our dogs don't usually chase the squirrels up a tree; more often they're working the scent trail the squirrel left on the ground while it was foraging for nuts.
