Is the only option to dig up the crab grass?
No! Do you have any baking soda in your house? If you do, sprinkle a little over the crabgrass, it will go belly up within 24 hours if you don't get rain or irrigate the yard.
Do a test spot first, just to ease your mind. The Crabgrass will be shriveled up and turn a dark green by the next day. It's the best Crabgrass killer there is and it works fast and safe.
Baking soda will not harm St. Augustine for sure, or any other grass that I'm aware of.

interesting
i couldnt find much about baking soda's effect on centipede, but its worth a try considering i was about to just use roundup anyway

I find that the St. Aug lawns I see with a lot of crab grass do not get cut properly on a regular cycle.

Did you leave some of the crabgrass to absorb the Roundup or did you pull it up completely?
I pulled up most of it after a rain when I could get the roots up. The few I missed and some dandelions you can't get up by the roots, I came back and sprayed round up on.

You can't lose if that was your strategy. Give it a try you will be pleasantly surprised.

And when I say acute, I mixed my spray in a windex bottle, parted the grass and sprayed 1 spritz per clump.
It still killed a spot about the size of a salad plate with some St. Aug. colateral damage, but it covered itself within a couple of months.

That is hogwash. I cut my grass twice per week in the summer and weed my gardens on a weekly basis.

Dig it up. Just work on one section at a time.

I tried the baking soda on one spot. I will provide an update tomorrow evening.

Is there a difference between Crabgrass and Dallisgrass? If so, how do you tell the difference and does the same thing kill them both?
