Hoop Net Question

Not sure how many here fish with hoop nets besides tenfoe but was wondering if he, or anyone, knew just how much the ring size of the net affected what you caught.
Back in middle school my dad and I had a few we'd put in the bayou but I don't remember how big they were.
I recently started playing around a bit and have a couple that are 2 1/2 feet but recently stumbled on a 4 ft one for sale for $150.00. It was never put in the water so too good of a deal to pass up but it's really bigger than I'm comfortable with.

They get even bigger...
A traditional hoop net is like the 4 footer and bigger. Put it in the middle of a creek bottom with the throat downstream. No bait. Let it sit for about a month. Leaves, slime, and debris cover the net and big flatheads think its a log. It's best to run them Dec. through the spring. So you only pick it up about 4 or 5 times over the time span.
The smaller 2.5 footers and similar size need to be baited and catch channel cat, blue cat, and turtles. Run them every other day or so...

Thanks. I am suprised at how long you're recommending leaving the big one without checking it.

A four foot is pretty big and that is a good price if it is in good shape. me and a buddy ran some five foots, they were hard to handle in a small boat and heavy as all get out in mississippi river.
i run traps and hoops quite a bit. my favorite size hoop is a two foot. easy to handle and catch.
We run smaller nets in creeks and lakes but bigger nets in big rivers.

Where I fish I don't have enough water to cover anything bigger than 3rd or so. I'd fish a 6 footer with 1" netting if I had enough water. If it's an old net spend a box o beer and inspect every hole. One busted string will let out every fish. Make sure you pole around and find a good spot free of logs/debris for the net to lay. I usually get out and set mine in by hand to make sure they lay exactly where I want. It takes more time, but if it isn't in the right spot it doesn't matter how quick you set them.

I dont want the big boys. I strive for the smaller flatheads and channels.
my buddy wants the big blues and flatheads though, we trade off

I'm too busy chasing chirrens around now to fish as much as I'd like, so when I get the chance I make sure it's right. It's a pain in the arse, but if you get out and set the back hoop exactly where you want it and have someone else in the boat pull the net open and tying the front rope you can put it in better places.
