Hiked Talladega National Forest last weekend (PIC HEAVY)

Uh, have you not seen the movie?

The scout troop that my three boys were members of hiked this area the first weekend in November for years. There was an opportunity fo cover all age groups here.
The first year scouts would do car camping at High Falls. They could set up camp on Saturday and get a day hike on Sunday by meeting up with the older boys coming into High Falls. They would also fix lunch for the hikers coming off the trail on Sunday.
If we had enough leadership we would offer a 20 miler for the older high school boys by dropping them off prior to getting to the Trailhead at the State Park on the highway.
The majority of the troop would do what we would call going over the top. That was about 12 miles total. It would start at the Trail Head Parking Lot and head up the Pinhoti to McDill Point where the plane wreckage is. Follow the ridge to what is called the Little Caney Head and camp. From the parking lot to Little Caney Head was roughtly 8 miles. That is where the Pinhoti and Chinnabee cross each other. If it had been dry there would hardly be any water to pump or purify for cooking.
Then on Sunday morning get up cook breakfast and head out to High Falls. Little Caney Head to High Falls was about 4 miles.
Great trip but people do leave trash and have packed out more than we brought in almost every time.
Never know what the weather will bring the first weekend in November and have caught snakes on the trail as well as had rain or snow. You just never know!

Nice pics. I grew up not very far from there (about a mile up the mountain from Camp Mac) and that McDill view is the best around.

Majority of the deer in that area are over hunted. They mainly run dogs, so hunters could care less. OP, this is where I grew up. It was better maintained in the 90s. The economic depression of the late 00s put a strain on state resources, and the park has suffered. From my understanding, there has been a recent effort to improve the area. It is beautiful, and has a ton of potential.

Many thousands of hunters enjoying the National Forest at this very moment. You might be thinking of the National Park System.
