Here's my plan - Bobwhite Quail Reintroduction

A couple of months ago there was a brief discussion on the OB about the virtual disappearance of the Bobwhite Quail in South Louisiana and how it would be impossible to get the numbers back up.
Well, I'm hardheaded and am going to try to reintroduce some birds anyway(on a small scale). My motivation is my father. He truly loves quail hunting and it will give us a chance to spend more time together as he's getting older. And what the hell, it may even work.
I was watching a few hunting shows last night and I happened upon this product and website. It was very informative and I think it's a good product, though a bit pricey.
So, before ya'll start getting all negative on me and telling how this isn't going to work and how it's basically just a call back pen, take the time to read the website a bit and see how it works and some of the information regarding quail habits and abilities.

Here's the plan: I have a 900 acre track of land that is prime quail habitat(see this thread), in which I plan on releasing 500 birds. The box holds 125 birds for 5 weeks at a time thus, my plan will take place over the course of 4 months(best case scenario).
I am going to get into contact with LDWF and Quail Forever to see if they would want to support me or just give me some information to help me be more successful.
After I speak with them, that may or may not help me determine the direction I want to go. I understand there is a lack of details here. That's due to the fact that this plan is in it's infancy.
Wick: could you please help me by giving me the contact info of the LDWF guy you know who releases all the birds.
Tell me what ya'll thing and any good ideas will be taken into consideration.

Just kidding but good luck with that. Noble endeavor.

sounds pretty interesting for sure. the best of luck with it. My dad liked to quail hunt. I never got to go with them mainly due to the loss of huntable quail numbers.
My grandfather raised quail. Had a pretty big operation going for awhile.
A friend of mine started a short lived quail hunting operation near Dequincy.
One thing I would recommend is to get rid of predators on your property as much as possible. here is a hit list:
coyotes/foxes/bobcats
feral cats
turkeys
fire ants
best of luck and keep us posted.

need to wipe out armadillos and pigs first too

The coyote can be a friend, kill all coons, possums, dillas, raptors (whoops can't kill them) etc... I will get you his information.
FYI I think he tried the early release with the chicks with no luck.

Props to you. I would love to see quail down here. My dad loves to quail hunt also but we have to go to Clear Creek or Covey Rise.

Here is an guide to managing Bobwhite Quail in South Texas. Obviously different terrain but I'm sure there are some useful correlations:
S. Texas Quail Mgmt.
Best of luck. Nothing like the sound of a covey flushing to get your heart racing.

The yote will eat more other preditors than it will quail...

Another problem is that formerly large undisturbed land blocks are now fractionalized. Perhaps that is one reason Texas still holds a decent quail population when they aren't in drought. Add this to the predator issues and fire ants like others have mentioned and the quail is against some tough odds.

You need a big incubator, a flight pen, and some good seed stock if you plan on it working. You'll constantly be releasing new birds. In a few years, who knows a small wild covey or two may take hold.
I doubt it though...

This is exactly what they do for pheasant in Wisconsin

I'm just being a realist.
There are quite a few preserves that release birds on a grand scale. If they don't have much luck with keeping a independent population, then it must be hard to do.

Tell me more about these preserves then..
Are they letting go 1000 or even 5000 full grown birds that they feed from chicks to adults and drink water out of troughs and eat chicken scratch? Yeah no wonder they don't survive.
These birds once thrived and it wasn't because Man was doing everything perfectly to keep them alive. I'm just being a realist.
