Good evening, quick question and I apologize if it’s not allowed, please delete if so.
But, my wife and I are wanting to breed our German Short Haired Pointer before we clip him. He is 1 year old and AKC registered. Just looking for some tips and guidance. Thank you.

Would suggest putting GSP in the title. You'll get more focused responses.

ETA: Does your dog have good papers, etc? It will help with promoting...also, are you wanting to paid for this or just trying to send him off a bang?

Does your dog hunt, do his parents, are his parent's titled? What do the hip xrays show? What qualities does your dog have that need to be passed onto puppies?

I don’t think breeding should be done unless it’s for the betterment of the breed not solely for the betterment of the owner.

It’s your moral responsibility to the pups that you do your due diligence and insure your dog is a good fit for breeding.

I think often times after the associated fees you will see the costs don’t become outweighed by the price per puppy until the second breeding.

This is all assuming that your dog is proven enough in the field to bring good money for the pups

Humans don’t morally owe dogs shite.

Dogs belong to people. Dogs can’t tell people what they want. Everything a human does to a dog is for the owner.

If you want to be even halfway responsible about this then you'll need: OFA certified radiographs of his hips and elbows, eye certifications, and testing to ensure you're not passing along genes for Exfoliative lupus erythematosus which is almost entirely exclusive to the breed.

To get the OFA rads I believe you'll need to wait until either 18 or 24 months

Ultimately, you also need to ask yourself why you're doing this at all?

Thank you all for the helpful information, never knew so much went in to this topic. My dogs parents are titled and I have the lineage from the breeder, if that means anything. As far as X-rays and eyes checks, no. Never have done anything like that.

If you’re going to force frick the population for your own betterment, you better damn believe you have a moral responsibility to the breed.

There is a ton of tech available to you these days - take advantage of it. Also, if you really want to show off the litter as good quality you'll have these certifications and people will pay you really good money for it. People that know how to shop for new puppies seek these out, always.

Lineage, titles, etc. would not mean as much to me...

Still curious though (b/c everyone has a different reason), why you wanting to breed?

In all honesty, the dog has been humping everything he sees, the wife has asked about pups from him, and I was just inquiring as to what goes in to breeding them and what my options are before I do anything

I get it - that comes up often. Since you have the male you'll be studding the dog out. Not always easy to find someone and if it is easy I'd be suspicious of that person. Have they done all of the hard work and testing you'll have done? Just things to consider...

In my experience, with Boykin Spaniel male in Tx, even after being cleared for hips/eyes etc and only having recessive trait for one unwanted characteristic(could be avoided by not breeding female with those traits) - no one will really talk to me bc my dog isn’t titled. So I go about trying to get dog titled, first experience is a shitshow and I write the AKC to tell them as much and that I don’t know I’d participate in future events.

So here I am with 4.5 yo stud, dog is handsome, great confirmation, and the SOB is relentless in the field. But without titles I haven’t been taken real seriously. I got discouraged and haven’t really pursued it further.

My wife has been pestering me to get the dog fixed, but part of me wants to send Hank’s pup and his pup’s pup out to retrieve ducks for me one day. It would feel like Hank was there for every hunt with me and it gets me teary eyed just thinking about it.

So other than allowing your dog to get a Nut that’s as far as the thought process has progressed? Might find a mutt in heat that will let him tie but not another gsp owner is even going to speak with past hello I want my dog to busta Nut.

I have plenty people seeking my male and female out - male is title(low end but working his way up) it is best to go watch any hunt test -with an experienced handler prior to handling for first time... .and KNOW EVERY rule at the level you are running... be it HRC, AKC, BSS, SRS or NSTRA.....

I on the other hand have turned down some breedings with my male due to females not having desired traits and unwillingness of owners to get health clearances - one even offered to double stud fee..

as for my female - I will be very very very selective when the time comes for her.
