Truck is 4x4 and I did use it there other week with all the rain. I'll try that out today.
I've heard of cats doing this. Whodat said his 5.0 did the same and it was a cat.

Emissions should be 100k (at least it was on both of my Tacomas, my dad's Tundra, and I know for Silverados)

That's what I thought but the service guy I talked to yesterday said it may be 60k.
Another piece of information - the "bad" oil change was done in mid may. 8k mile ago. Of those 8k I did 1000 miles pulling 3500-4000lbs. I know that's not good if low on oil but I thibk a problem would have come up sooner than this week. I assume about 6qt were in the motor if 5.5 came out. It was still registering on the dip stick

Your CAT should be warranties for 80k or 100k miles at least mine were on my previous z71 - I don't believe this is controlled by the manufacturer either as my truck was out of warranty when they replaced them at no charge.

Sitting at my buddy's house who is an ME and knows a good bit about motors.
He agrees is louder at the driver side cat but could be echoing. He describes it as a click of a single valve (not a chatter of valves) in sync with the rpms. Sounds like slop with something

May be the timing chain tensioner, I know the older mod motors had problems. Had one come into a friends shop one time that had so much slack it had eaten through the timing cover.

Maybe so. No way to tell with just listening. Definitely more audible the closer to the driver side cat you are. Ford will figure it out pretty quick Tuesday when they hook up their machines to it. If it is the motor hopefully they can tighten any slop without new parts or replace a cat

Well hopefully it's just the cat, but I would recommend not going 8k miles without checking your oil level from now on. Most engines use/burn oil from design. Most newer cars include this information in the manual, take a look and see.

Usually I do check. Got a 5 month old and more responsibility at work and a new boat. Life happened haha. shite this day in age I should be able to go 8k with good conscious on a Ford v8.

May have missed where you said it but did the change oil light come on?
Intelligent Oil Life Monitor
Intelligent Oil Life Monitor

NORMAL SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE Your vehicle is equipped with an Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor (IOLM) that determines when you should change your engine oil based on how your vehicle is used. By considering several important factors in its calculations, the IOLM helps ensure that your engine can perform at its best while also helping you avoid unnecessary oil changes. With the help of the IOLM, you don’t have to remember to change your oil on a preset mileage-based schedule. Your vehicle will let you know when it’s time for an oil change by displaying a message in the information display.
The following table provides examples of vehicle use and how each scenario can affect oil change intervals. In practice, actual oil change intervals will depend on several different factors, but severe usage will generally require more frequent changes.

Light never came on. Truck said oil life 22% the day I changed it
Posted on 9/4/16 at 7:58 am to SeaPickle
Sounds like it's not making oil pressure

Pressure guage is good and always has been.

Damn, I will admit I trust that feature way too much. I did a little reading on it and it had me convinced it was legit. Hopefully it ends up being nothing major with your truck and this thread will serve as a good PSA to do your own checks on a regular basis, don't put all your faith in the computer.

good chance it is your cat, ford had a problem with that year model with the cats going bad. They replaced mine fo free.

Supposed to be semi-synthetic oil.

Well after more people looked at it we all say it's the driver side cat. Pretty easily hear it's originating there.
Just went on a drive and I can hear it anytime I accelerate or decelerate (hard braking with down shift causing rpms to jump up) but not when cruising at any speed. Went up to 75mph.
Reving the truck in park shows the rattle doesn't stay with the rpms 1:1 like when idling. Won't rattle if holding a rpm in park but will rattle when rpms falling or increasing.

Have you tried it in 4WD yet?
Posted on 9/4/16 at 9:46 pm to SeaPickle
You can run 8k on oil easily
Posted on 9/4/16 at 9:46 pm to cajuncarguy
Nah forgot after IMO narrowing it down to the cat. I will try tomorrow just to rule it out.
