Dear resident AR gurus:

I'm a AR optics noob. Need y'alls direction on which way to go. Hep me

I have lots of questions so I apologize if this gets long.

I just finished my 11.5" project. and needing an optic to top her off. This will mainly be a home / property defense, truck gun, have fun at the range weapon.

So, I am looking for an optic that will be a CQ and a mid range optic.

Was looking at a red dot / magnifier combo and almost pulled the trigger on a Sig Sauer pkg of Romeo 5 and Juliet 4

Then I hear about these LPVO's and now I'm torn

Would a LPVO be something one would put on top of a 11.5? Would that make it "unbalanced"? Is that a dumb question? I don't know, I'm a noob

What about CQ targets? Would a LPVO be as fast to acquire a target at CQ as a red dot would?

How far do you think this 11.5" barrel could reach out and still be effective? 400 meters? More? Would a red dot and magnifier be enough for this?

Am I overthinking this?

I want to limit my budget to around 700.00 for this set up and looking around, I think I can.

Primary Arms has a few LPVO's that are really affordable and I like the ACSS reticle they have on a few. Don't know how to read those reticles but they look dope and I'd probably figure it out, eventually

Any advice, direction, would be appreciated. I'm learning here so be kind gents.

I love LPVOs on my ARs, but for a 11.5" I would go with a red dot.

ETA, as I typed that I realized my profile pic is a 12.5 with a Vortex LPVO. I ran that setup for a while and really liked it. I ended up putting the Vortex on a 16" and a Trijicon MRO on the 12.5". I like that setup a lot better.

Based on your listed usages for the gun and its barrel length, I wouldn't use any magnification. I'd roll with the Romeo 5.

Another vote for no magnification based on what you’re intended use is.

That Romeo imho is all you need.

You don’t want or need a magnifier on that setup. If you don’t feel like spending military money there’s nothing wrong with a Sig, Primary Arms or Holosun. I’d be comfortable with any of those 3.

Another vote for the Sig Sauer Romeo5. I have 2 and love them. Especially for a truck gun bc it has the sleep/instant on feature. It sleeps after no movement for a few minutes, then turns on as soon as its bumped. Plus it has 40 or 50,000 hour battery life. One youtube review showed a guy freezing it, dropping it and shooting it with a shotgun and it still worked. Very impressive optic.

LPVO is almost but not quite as fast as a red dot up close. 11.5 is good to 400. You lose terminal performance but it will make it out there fine and have good lethality. You can also reach out that far with a red dot if you know how to hold over the target. You won't be as fast as an lpvo out to distance and you will likely have to take more shots to get a hit, but it isn't impossible. Either run the lpvo or just a red dot. Magnifiers add enough weight and cost that you may as well go lpvo as you get more versatility with an lpvo vs red dot and magnifier.

11.5 I’d put a red dot. I would want a longer barrel shooting at 200+ yards if it were me.
