Hackberry, LA - Guide Recommendation

I am looking to guide a fishing boat for trout and reds out of Hackberry, LA. I would like to stay at Spicer's. Before I randomly hit guides up from just looking on the internet, can anyone give me suggestions on good guides you may have used in the past?

well hackberry? You've pretty much narrowed it down to Hackberry Rod & Gun. There are some others in that area, but I'd go with HR&G.

Brad Boudreaux at Boudreaux's Guide service. Or his brother James. Cool guys and catch fish.

Corbello's guide service. This man grew up on the lake.

The Constance brothers (Paul/Tim) used to have a guide service named Cedar Edge Lodge. Later, they merged w/Black Bayou, but "unmerged". This was years ago though. I'm not sure if they are fishing under the name Cedar Edge or Black Bayou or something else, but they fish out of Spicer's, or at least used to. I've been with them at least a dozen times. Great guys, work hard. You'll like them. If Gary Pelloquin (sp) is still fishing with them, request him if you can't get someone last named Constance.
Call Spicer's, and see if they can tell you how to find them.
Also, Ray Christy (Fishy Business) used to fish out of there. Also another good choice. Never fished with him, but he had a good following, and was well respected by the Constance brothers. He outfished us several times.
It's been a while since I've stayed there, but I always LOVED staying there. Even stayed in the little grey camp that's attached to the store. That was just as cool as the new(er) free standing cottages.
The guys from Hackberry Rod and Gun are pretty close to there I think. Those guys catch fish as well. Alot of the other guides didn't like them too much, but I think it was just because they were a really big outfit. Prolly had more to do w/Terry himself though, from what I gathered. I never met him/can't opine thereon.
Anyway, I'd say anyone that Spicer's recommended would be a good call. They'd probably only recommend the guys that actually bait up/fish from there, and when I was going there, all of those guides got along/were good dudes.
After I got a little older, I started fishing on the other side of the lake/doing the Poe/Eric Rue thing. Also a good choice. But some of my best trips/most enjoyable were fishing on the "old side" of the lake out of Spicers. The guys on that side of the lake seemed more, I dunno, "local"?
Liked all of them alot.

Yeah most of them keep their boats at Spicers.

Prob the best idea. Several outfits run out of Spicers, so since your staying there, see who they recommend.

My son and I were assigned to a guide named Jake when we went to Hackberry last year. He did a good job.

That's my uncle... he's not officially affiliated or guiding with anyone, but he still fishes all the time.

Otis, I fished w/Eric a bunch of times and thought he was a good dude?
'Course, I WAS paying him and all.

IIRC, Ray was/is a helicopter pilot or somesuch....maybe even flew in Vietnam? Back in the day, when I was fishing around there, IIRC, he would like fish a week, then fly a week, or something like that.
One the ONLY bad trip I had w/the Constance guys, we fished w/some dude named Jude. I think he was a fill in type of guy. He was nice enough, but clearly didn't know nearly as much about what he was doing as Tim, Paul, Gary-man, etc....
Anyway, I was pretty pissed that day....we caught one trout I think (she was big), but I felt like I wasn't even fishing reefs all day. You know that feeling where you just feeling mud on the bottom/no oysters?
Anyway, we got back to the dock, and Ray had apparently snuck up on a BUNCH of reds....he had limits of beautiful 18-20 inch reds, not to mention about 30 nice trout.
I was pretty pissed.

Yeah, he flew helicopters in Vietnam, then for a hospital in West Lake like you said, week on, week off through the 80's and 90's.
He was married to my mom's sister a long time ago. After their divorce, us guys didn't let it get in between fishing.
I still keep in touch with him for reports when I go down there, and hunt/fish with his son, Brandon, a few times a year.

Fished with Eric last fall. He runs a first class operation. Accomodations were very nice, food was great and yes his wife was sweet and cute.
We laughed all day. He must have forgotten his asshat at home.
I am recommend.

I had always heard that about him Geauxt, but never fished with him.
I think the guys out of Spicer's told me he moved to Florida or some such.
Not sure though. Seriously, I've never heard anyone say "wow, what a good that dude that Shaughnessey is".

It's on the other side of Calcasieu Lake, but check out Grosse Savanne. I had a buddy in college that guided for them, not sure if he still does though. Quality place, pretty pricy FWIW.

All that stuff on the other side of the lake that's run out of Hebert's seems to be a little more expensive. Guess because everything's a little newer or whatever.
We started fishing with the Poe's, and haven't regretted it all. They fish artificials alot longer than the other guide services, and for whatever reason (I'm assuming a combo of just having so many guides/fishing artificials), we always catch bigger fish with them.
The other thing with them that I found is different is that I cannot tellyou how many times we were fishing some bald arse open part of the Lake, with ZERO boats around us, and hammering the big trout.
One of the best trips I ever had with them - the whole boat only caught about 25 trout - but the smallest trout was 19 inches. The other 24 - every one of them - was between 3 and 5 pounds, except for the two that were over 5 pounds.
We specifically told them we wanted to catch big fish that day/not numbers, and they did not disappoint. The guide took us to this spot that he said was a tiny reef, and that there wouldn't be many fish there, but they'd all be big. Seems like every time we were about to leave - like every 15/20 minutes or so - someone would hook up a big arse trout. Stayed there the whole day.
Action wasn't fast, but man, what a pretty box of fish.

Man, y'all are getting me fired up. Going to fish down there for the this weekend. Going out of Hebert's with Contraband Charters. Never fished Big Lake before, and taking one of my kids who just got bit hard by the fishing bug, so doubly excited.
If you offered me a 4lb trout every 20 minutes for the day, I'd buy that all day long!!!
