Browning Auto-22.
Winchester Lever action
Personally I’d get him an O/U shotgun in a 20ga.
Maybe a custom hunting rifle

1 ruger 10-22
2 benneli super black eagle 12ga
3 tikka t3 308
4 Glock 19mos
5 ruger mark4 or browning buckmark 22 pistol
6 browning citori or franchi 20ga over and under
7 Winchester or tikka 300wm
8 ar-15 223

That would be a good start to having all bases covered for anything in North America from beer cans skeet and duck to jihadist and deer and moose’s
Change the order for applicability and age considerations

I was thinking about a 22lr pistol this year, but maybe a ruger revolver.

Ol boy's list is pretty good.

I will add. IMO do not get a youth rifle. Especially if you will be hunting in a box. Quality is subpar.

eta: When my son was about 11 I got him a Remington 1100 12 gauage and ordered a short stock for it. Worked great.

There are some good options on that list, but it might be better to wait on a 12 gauge semi auto. The semi autos keep improving and there’s likely going to be something even nicer when he’s old enough for it. A 20 gauge gas gun like a Browning Silver might be a good choice early on.

Semi Auto handguns are constantly improving. Glock is working on its 6th generation… might be worth waiting as well and get something timeless like a S&W/Colt/Ruger revolver for now.

Might want to wait a few years

My dad let me shoot his .22 at 4-5 yrs old under his supervision. He bought me a .410 at 7 years old, first deer rifle at 10.

At toddler stage just buy him some toy guns/cap guns to play with so he is familiar with a gun but no accidents. And teach him not to point even the toy gun at people. Discipline him if he does. It instills a sense of a gun is not a toy and basic gun safety at a young age

Ruger 10/22 needs to be on the list.
Obviously a shotgun. My early 80’s Remington 870 has been so reliable. I love it.
I also have a 70’s Remington 1100 20 gauge my dad bought me. It severed me well growing up as a kid.
Ruger single six revolver in .22/.22 magnum.

Just a few of my favorites.

Yeah it’s definitely not a list to end all buying of guns, but more of a list that are reliable timeless and tons of aftermarket support and versatile.
Even an original HK black eagle would be a solid gun if someone showed up with one today. Ruger 10-22 I have changed the stock and put a bull barrel on it.
Ruger mark or buckmark stock can then be fitted with a red dot and or suppressor.
Im all for continuing to buy guns but some of mine like my sbe2 i have not seen anything that would make me want anything else.

I think the point is, OP is using his son as an excuse to buy himself some new guns

When did the OB become so lame?

Clearly the OP didn't buy his 1-year-old son a T-bolt and let him have at it in the yard. He is collecting these guns as Christmas gifts then when his son is ready to shoot them, they will take them out and do some shooting.

I think it's a pretty cool idea. When his son gets of age to start shooting, he will have a story behind each gun. The T-bolt was his first Christmas gift, and the whatever gun he gets this year was his second Christmas gift all the way until he is 18.

I will have bought a centerfire rifle for whitetails and such, a .22 for plinking and small game, and a lifetime shotgun such as a M2 in 12 gauge for my boys to have when they head off from home. This should allow them to take care of anything they need.

I have a M2 .20 and a Montefeltro .20 to help with grandkids at some point, as well as a Ruger American youth in 7mm08. And a crack barrel .410. These are to have around for the littles as they come.

All that I need to get at this point is another 10/22...and decide if the last one gets a new Winchester SX4 that i just got...or if I get another M2 for them. I just love that gun.

7 Winchester or tikka 300wm
8 ar-15 223

Really nice list. I am buyhing a .300 wm for the 'house', if they get invited to or go on a hunt where this is needed they can just use it for a week or two.

A new firearm for Christmas while he is growing up. It's not like he's going to be playing with gins before he's ready or able.

He will still get Christmas presents that are age appropriate. He will still get a truck when the time comes. He's not going without anything for this, it's just something extra.

And they aren't "for me", I pretty much have most of my bases covered. I don't really have the need for anything else right now.
