They’re definitely affectionate and loving dogs. I always recommend getting them in pairs as puppies for this reason. Mine have taken to our lab puppy extremely well also.

My buddy has 3 male GSP that he keeps in a kennel and they are hell on wheels.

You have to play with them. It helps to have kids that are interested in the dog as well.

Mine came out of a kennel and was wild. Within a month or so she mellowed out, she gets better every day.

I love GSP and think as a working dog they are great.

you said house dog but also state you realize they need to exercise and stimulate this dog so that should be fine. a good 45m-hour a day might be needed to really get that energy out.

they are really sharp dogs and learn fast. relatively few healthy concerns thats breed specific.

thumbs up.

Finding a Drahtaar is much more difficult than anticipated.
I have sent emails to several breeders with little luck.
If anybody has suggestions I would love some help.

I have a half chocolate lab, half GSP. He is the best dog ever. Super smart, super sweet. Great in the dove field! What I’ve heard from folks that have GSP is that half lab in him should make him calmer than a pure GSP. My buddy has his parents, both from really good hunting lineages. They had an accidental litter and all the pups were mainly chocolate with some white/tick marks with GSP body features.

I've had both. I love my GSP.
GSPs shed but you will not notice it as much as Labs.
Just as smart if not smarter than Labs.
More versatility. Mine points and retrieves quail/woodcock, tracks shot deer and hogs, picks up the newspaper, etc. I don't duck hunt much but I'm sure I can teach her to. Mine is also doesn't come from any special bloodline either.

I also have a young English Pointer now, and she's been very good in the house as well.

It's all about exercise and training, the rest will fall into place.

Growing up we had GSPs. They needed a lot of exercise. I have had labs since college. I prefer yellow labs, just my preference. Another breed to look at is a Lagotto Romagnolo. They love to retrieve, smart, great temperament, good around kids, mid size dog and don't shed.
I'll repeat.
Don't shed.

Not many in the US now but they were originally bread for hunting birds in the marshes of Italy.

On a side note, you can train them to hunt Truffles.

GSP are not house dogs unless they are exercising regularly

Can attest to this. We have a black and white GSP and had a one acre plot in a neighborhood, fenced in backyard. You just cannot wear them out. He would spend the entire day running in the backyard, barking at rocks, you name it.

We just moved to 20 acres and as soon as he hits the porch he is gone. Hauls arse into the woods doing who knows what. Scared us the first few times but he does his thing, chases deer, then about 30 minutes later he comes back, gets water and wants to go again.

My GSP Duke staring at lizards out of my daughters room. He’s part human with a ton of energy. Check out my avatar for another picture.

There is a big difference in really well breed field trail shorthairs and shorthairs far removed from their heritage…

His parents are from G&S gun dogs out of Alto, TX. He was doing well tracking but life with 3 kids has gotten in the way of consistent training.

I'll second this, although they get the reputation for not being as prey driven as other dogs mine will hunt till he dropped dead. One thing to consider is they are definitely velcro dogs so if you dont like being followed around the yard/house at all times may not be the dog for you
