My wife and I took the kids out West last year during the summer and were looking into taking them up to the Great Lakes this summer. Has anyone ever done a road trip up there? Looking for things to do if we head up there.

Also, I know Michigan has the COVID crazy governor, but I can't find much on if they will be open over the summer.

Smallmouth fishing on lake st Clair is awesome. Guide called it a slow day and we caught 25-30 fish just drifting, with some 5+lb fish mixed in. Kids would have a blast, almost constant action. Detroit isn’t as bad as people make it sound, lots of restaurants and staying options. Can’t really suggest much more as we just passed through, but that was a highlight of the trip.

Fly fished for salmon in the Pere Marquette river in Michigan last October. Was awesome and the covid issue didn’t seem to be acknowledged out in the sticks where I was staying.

I grew up in Michigan, live in BR now. Northern Michigan and the UP is where it's at. Canoe down the Ausable River. Lots of good microbrew beers in Michigan for adults. Lots of waterfalls. Ocqueoc falls and many others have picnic and swimming areas. NW Michigan has cherry farms and is the artsy area of the state. Sleeping bear dunes are beautiful. Alpena has glass bottom shipwreck tours and fishing charter captains. Mackinaw Island and the UP if you have the time.

Get Koegel's viennas and Pinconning Cheese.

We were in the UP at the end of September chasing woodcock and grouse. Lots of lake houses, trail rides in national parks, canoes/ yaks type of stuff to do. Very little crazy mask stuff up there during that time. The locals are pretty laid back

Sure I guess for something different, I live on Lake Erie and the walleye bite is strong, if you wanna work for it, lotta trolling, but for me it just can’t compare to the sportsman paradise.
I rather fish the chargin or cuyahoga rivers up here.

Check out Door County Wisconsin. Lots of fishing charters in the area for either Lake Michigan or Green Bay. There's also some really good parks and beaches. If you go around when the cherries will be ripe you can pick them at different orchards. There's also some good golf courses if that's your thing.

I've been there multiple times with family and we've done things like:
Charter fishing
Para-sailing
Segway tours
Sail boat day cruise
Mini golf
Hiking trails
Kayaking

It's a nice place but it can be a little tourist trappy around the small towns.

We are driving up from New Orleans ... was going to go up through Ohio, around Buffalo to Detroit then up to the upper. Anything a must see outside of Niagara?
