quote:

It is not often that a story generates so much interest and enthusiasm, but this isn’t just any story. This is the story of 8,000 pieces of American history—8,000 artifacts that speak to the American experience during the 20thcentury. They were born of the World Wars, and they remind us of the era when imperial dynasties crumbled, when fascism threatened the international balance of power, and when the United States sent men to war with a .45 Automatic. These 8,000 pistols fought on battlefields from Europe to Southeast Asia, only to then be consigned to long-term storage in a government warehouse. Although at one time it looked like they might be destroyed, the story of these pistols has a happy ending.

They will have the download link for the order forms on their website on June 4th but can only be sent in from Sept 4th thru Oct 4th... I will be sending mine in but I don't have the kind of luck to be chosen randomly for the first batch but hey... Who knows, right?

Have you heard how they're going to select buyers?

Random draw, lottery style basically.

The handful of times I have been to the store, they always had a sign up,saying not to ask about these pistols.
So of course, I always asked about them.
Cool knowing it's about to happen, finally.

A while back i read some people planned on sumbitting their apps overnight. Looks lome that'd be worthless. As long as it's im before the deadline you got a shot. Except me. I also have terrible luck.

Exactly why would they ever be destroyed? Just to keep them off the streets?
Our government sure tries to waste money when it can.

That was a big "fear" in congress (amongst the unwitting and/or the fear mongers, obviously).

And it's part of the reason that anyone lucky enough to be chosen to buy one has to go thru TWO background checks. The first just to start the process to ensure you're eligible to buy one and the 2nd when you pick it up at your FFL. Unlike the CMP's M1 Garand Program, the 1911's will not be getting shipped directly to your home.

It is a royal pain in the arse, speaking from personal experience from when I got my Garand in January.

Here's page 4 of the CMP M1 Garand order form. It's the checklist of all that needs to be completed. You better believe the 1911 checklist is going to be at least 2 pages.

To answer both your questions, you have to be a member of a CMP Affiliated Club or Program. The easiest and cheapest one around here is the Louisiana Shooting Association for $15/year.

Then you have to submit the paperwork for the 1911 sometime between Sept 4 and Oct 4 and then all entries will be randomized and perspective buyers contacted in the randomized order.

Don't you also have to show proof of participation in a markmanship event also?

Not necessarily an event. Prior LEO or Military service, conceal carry permit, or a hunters ed certificate from a course that included live fire are a few of the common ways. Here are several other ways to show proof of markmanship (taken from the M1 Garand Order Form).
