Looking to build a pier in Grand Isle and trying to find the best deal for the treated wooden materials such as 8 inch posts 10 feet long. Also, about how much should I expect to pay for said posts? Thanks.

The treated wood you need to contact with salt water is the good stuff with higher amounts of chemicals. You can't buy what you need from home depo and expect it to last, I think the place in Galliano, is regarded as a good place to purchase from...

I use Dufrene in Cut Off. You want the lumber that has 2.5 pcf CCA for use in saltwater. Most likely will be special order and take about 3 weeks to be milled and treated. They will quote over the phone.

I think its called Triple Son now. This is where we had gotten all material for our camp. Always making deliveries to the island so can get all good quality material timely.

Triple Son is owned by the same people that own Dufrene Lumber, Paul Dufrene III and sons. Good people and good service to Grand Isle or anywhere that they have a location. I highly recommend them.

When I did my bulkhead I priced it all from Triple Son to New Orleans to Mississippi. By the time you added delivery cost, etc. it was the same price or cheaper to order from Triple Son and if you got some bad lumber they were here to replace.

You are going to be looking for "saltwater treated" which is a minimum of 3.0, if you want to pay the extra you can get 3.5. Even with this if you are looking to do a pier you can expect about 7 to 10 years out of it. I would strongly advise that you get them early and mix up a homemade coal tar mixture and paint the underwater portions prior to putting them in the water, should get you a couple of extra years. A neighbor of mine did this and you can tell the different. The worms are attacking the green stuff but not the nasty black stuff.

Triple Son stocks the 3.0 pilings but any of your dimensional is going to have to be special ordered with about a 3 week wait as previously quoted.

There is still a lot of FEMA funds being spent on the island where they are raising camps if you can find an old camp that they are raising and get the old creosote pilings they will last a whole lot longer than the new green treat stuff.

EDIT: When I say that you can expect 7 to 10 years out of I mean you are going to have a piling or two that the bugs attack despite the treatment and will have to replace some every now and then ......

We built our wharf on Grand Isle in 1993 using creosote pilings from LP&L. Still good today. It is a shame that you can’t use them now.
