Got Hummingbirds?

I was surprised to see 5 or 6 feeding on my satsuma tree this afternoon. I'm going to get a feeder cause I don't have much to hold them arond in the way of flowers.
Had hung a feeder years ago but didn't have much luck. Any pointers?

Don't know why but I've always been intrigued by them and martins. Saw a pair of Purple Martins over the weekend. I thought I wasn't going to have any. Seems like they're usually here earlier, aren't they?

Yep. Get the basic red one clear tank. Its cheap and works well.
Don't use the liquid mix that is sold.
Mix four parts water to one part sugar.
I always heat my sugar into the water to prevent separation later in the feeder.

I've seen them in Pville as early as Feb. 15 and stay as late as Oct. 15

Purple Martins are very late this year. I've only got 3 pairs and I'm usually full up by April.
As for the Humminbirds, some of them winter here so they're always in the area. Perky Pet feeders and instant nectar will work. A mixture of 4:1 sugar dissolved in water will also keep the birds healthy and hanging around.

I haven't seen one yet in NWLA. Had a flock of geese buzz the tower at ball practice the other day heading north. I figure the humminbirds shouldn't be far behind.

Flight has amazed me since I was five.
To this day, the flight of the hummingbird has not been replicated/duplicated in anything living or dead.
Truly unique animals. Actually, it is the smallest, warm blooded animal on earth.

Saw my first of the year this past Saturday at my feeder. That sucker buzzed around my head for at least 20 seconds too. It was awesome and scary at the same time. Have seen a few more since. It's cool to see them hit my feeder and then perch in the oak right by it.

I've always heard that the liquid has to be a bright color so they can see it better. I put my feeder out this weekend and have had a few birds show up. It's fun to watch them when 4-5 try to all eat from it at the same time. It never fails that one ends up being a bully and tries to knock the rest off the feeder so he can have it all to himself.

I haven't seen a difference in the number of birds at my feeders with clear sugar water.

A bit off topic, but just started noticing bats flying thru our carport right at dusk. They usually show up if the carport light is on which attracts moths and skeeters. It's cool to sit there and watch them come thru.
