Giving a dog ibuprofen

What are "rules" on giving a ~35 lb dog ibuprofen?
Back story
Staying with my brother for a few weeks and he has a sweet little hound but she limps and it has been worse the past few days. I told him to give her some Advil and he said he didn't know if it was safe.
What dose could she take without it hurting her?
She can run and jump over a 4' fence with no problem but going about mundane tasks she strughles.

Maybe ask a vet? Might could call the animal shelter and get some good advice also.

Yes, I know there are, but sometimes you have to wait a while for an answer from them. A couple of quick phone calls might get an answer faster, so you could help a little sooner.
I wasn't being a smart arse. I just hate to see a dog hurting.

I wondered this before, and every answer was pretty much, no.

This is what I have always heard.
Quoted from article:
Ibuprofen is a medication with a very narrow margin of error when it comes to dosing a dog. Even at very low doses, if you are using ibuprofen for dogs for a prolonged period, it can still cause serious health concerns. These concerns include GI irritations and ulcerations, GI hemorrhaging, gastric perforations, as well as renal damage.

Don’t do it. Get your vet to proscribe some rimadyl.

When I thought my Boxer had arthritis because she wouldn’t jump on up on the bed the vet told me a dog knows it’s limitations, they will only do what they feel like they can do
My Boxer was still active when outdoors running & playing
Figured out it was the wood floors, put a rug down & she was fine
Treats with glucosamine could help but I wouldn’t give her people meds without discussing with a vet

Thanks guys
It's just strange
She'll run out the door and leap over the fence and when I call her back she'll take a few steps and jump back over.
But then then she limps around the house like she can barely walk.

Have you checked her paws?
She may be picking up stickers in the yard
Can you keep her from jumping & running & see if that makes a difference?

NEVER GIVE A DOG IBUPROFEN. IT IS POISONOUS TO DOGS...QUICK DEATH
you can only give your dog an enteric coated aspirin
There is a prescription called carprofen that is chemically different from IB
Regular use of that will make your dog more comfortable...but does have an affect on the lifespan of your dog...do you want the dog to be comfortable for a shorter time on this earth, or be miserable...that is your choice...unfortunately rimadyl does the same

Ibuprofen is definitely not recommended. Treating a dog right now that chewed up a bottle. Now granted a 200mg won’t kill a 35lb dog it could cause vomiting and diarrhea.
I don’t recommend any OTC anti inflammatory Meds. Narrow safety margins.
Carprofen that was mentioned is a good option and it will not shorten your dogs life. It can have effects on liver and kidneys used long term but not a guarantee. Many dogs take it for years with no side effects.

Usually give an adult 50-75 lb dog a half a benadryl. I assume Tylenol is about the same.

Thanks for all the input.
Will call the vet tomorrow.
She's snoozing now I just don't want her to hurt. She's a happy girl but I know she's in pain and we want her to feel better.

I always use Meloxicam for my dog of you can get ahold of it. Not a vet but it's safe for most dogs.

Don't do it. Ibuprofen is toxic to dogs. It can fry their livers.

Buys some quercetin for dogs.

My vet said to give my dog 1/2 a baby aspirin when she broke her leg

Always used aspirin for my dogs, but not for more than a few days and always give it with Famotidine (Pepsid AC) to help with GI issues.
