Went wade fishing this weekend with a Gen Z and let him borrow some of my equipment. The kid sat down in the water and dunked the reel in saltwater. He continued to keep it in the water while fishing. He’s 20 years old.

How do I reach these kids....

Firmly with a two hand grip around their neck!

Penn Fierce II reel, one of my favorite back-ups.

Clearly he didn’t have to kneel on rice as a kid when he fooked up Like I had to.

I cannot trust the next generation...

Did you explain to him why he was fricking up?

Yes, he continued to do it after the fact. I wasn’t going to leave my spot to tear him a new one because I was on the school. Never leave the table while you’re on a heater.

I don’t know if it’s Gen Z, think it may be their parents

Seen plenty of grown arse men do some pretty stupid stuff too

U could politely ask him to help you clean your reels and let him see what the inside looks like and how it sitting under water ruins it.
Most don’t even know simple mechanical principles and maintenance habits, we are a society of disposable items.
Most of his generation gets a new phone, new bow, new hunting jacket every year and has knives with replaceable blades. He may think reels are the same way!!

I hear this as:

I'm going to bitch about gen Z, but catching fish is still more important to me than making sure Gen Z is raised right.

He was probably just embarrassed to be fishing with a grown man acting like a little bitch

I love my Dad but he didnt teach me to fix shite. I don't think my grandfather taught him how to fix anything either. I fix things by trial and error along with youtube. You can fix anything with youtube now.

let him borrow some of my equipment

This should have been your first clue. If they don't come with the gear it likely means they are just starting out. Completely fine and you should be given an atta boy for bringing others out on the boat but they obviously need some coaching to get started.

It's on their elders to teach them better. If you treat their behavior like a lost cause and don't make the effort to teach the right principles, then they sure as hell won't be teaching those values to their kids - and there goes all decency and respect for generations to come.

Kinda like trash in the woods. If you come across somebody else's litter and you don't do anything to clean it up, then you are the one that left it there.

To your point, he gave me money to replace the reel. I told him it’s not about the money, it’s the principle of not taking care of other people’s stuff when they let you borrow something. My dad would have whipped me with that rod had I done that to his equipment.

If he woulda been with a guy sharing the school he woulda kept it out of the water.

Like when dogs are mad at you they will piss on something. That was his version of pissing on the rug cause you were being a jerk

I told him to come over to the school... you can lead a horse to water, can’t make them drink. I’m not going to pick him up off his lazy arse and cast it for him. At 20, you’re a grown man.

did you take the money?

And do you not expect there to be any chance of a reel getting wet when you go wade fishing? thats just part of the deal.
