Garmin vs Simrad on bay boat

My Garmin went kaput in my bay boat after 4 short years after warranty expired and no help from Garmin. I went by West Marine and really liked the Simrad Go 9 series. Anyone have any experience? Boat is used in the lake and near shore GoM. Obviously Garmin would be easier fix without having to replace transducer, etc. and can’t really go wrong w either brand.

I went with a simrad nss12 evo3 on my new boat. The menu options feel more intuitive to me than they do with Garmin. More importantly,Standard Mapping overlay maps are way better on the Simrad than the navionics maps that Garmin uses.

The standard mapping system is a game changer

Nothing against Garmin but I didn’t use them simply bc I couldn’t use standard mapping cards with them. I agree that those maps are a game changer. I went with Lowrance but I’ve heard lots of great things about simrad too.

Simrad and Lowrance are owned by the same parent company. I went with a new Simrad unit for my bay boat recently. So far so good. Simrad GO 7 XSE. It was between that and the Lowrance Elite. However the Simrad offered the ability of pinch to zoom and full touch screen, which I liked over the Elite.

Garmin has the Louisiana marsh and bayou card which is the same satellite imagery as the standard maps so it’s a wash to me

The decision for me, at the time, is largely for the standard mapping chip, though historically I've preferred using Garmin units vs. Lowrance. Now with the newest boat we're running a Simrad EVO2 NSS12 and to me it's a whole lot like a Garmin as far as being intuitive like some have said, have all our motor functions on there as well, like it a lot.
Sorry to hear about not getting help from Garmin; I used to work for West Marine and Garmin was always one of, if not the best, to deal with for customer service.

If you do get a standard mapping card, at least get the one with the trusted routes through the marsh. That yellow trusted route line makes running areas of the marsh I don’t know all that well much easier.

Let loose some of dat coin man.

I recently purchased a Garmin echoMAP CHIRP 74cv after watching how shitty and slow my father's Lowrance Chirp is running the Standard Mapping software. I love it.
For whatever reason, no one seems to realize that Garmin has satellite mapping available for their newer units as well. I purchased the Bluechart g2 HD Satellite Mapping Card (Louisiana Bayou) for $99 and I don't really see what makes the Standard Mapping card any better--especially considering how much it slows down a lot of the Lowrance units.
