Anyone ever seen one like this? Fishing a local pond in the neighborhood (Youngsville). The second pic is one I normally catch. He crushed a beetle spin.

Shellcracker AKA Red-eared Sunfish. Louisiana probably has a Louisiana name for them.
Pic #1 is missing the red ear.
Excellent to fry.

When I was a little kid and didn't like any fish that didn't come from capt d's, this was the first species I really enjoyed eating when my friend's mom fried them.

First looks like a bluegill. Best eating fish you can catch. Just need to catch a lot of them.
Second is a redear.

Negative. Definitely not a bluegill.
It is Lepomis microlophus.

Scaled and fried whole in salted cornmeal. I can eat a dozen off the bone and eat the crispy tail.

I get confused on all the different names for the same fish sometimes. This is definitely one of those.
I grew up calling them shellcrackers and Georgia bream. But I grew up about 20 minutes away from the GA line so that might have something to do with it.

Get some worms and go back and do some damage on them.

They're all bream. Or they used to be....now they are bluegill, shellcracker (thats what that one is) and all manner of names but they are all bream.

looks like a redear. I've caught hundreds of them up north.
