In your price range a Chevy is your best bet. One of the big issues with the 6.0 and 6.4 ford is that they need to be ran often and ran hard to avoid some issues and babied to avoid others. They need to be meticulously maintained with very expensive fluids.
It's just not worth it IMO. You can get a duramax and not worry about it.

I'd say a cummins would be a better bet than a Chevy. He could get a 5.9.

Good luck finding one in any kind of respectable condition. The 5.9 dodges and 7.3 fords are rare in good shape.

I know of 2 1 tons. Both with manuals.
Not for sale though.

There's the key phrase
The 6.7 cummins is a good motor, you just get it in a shitty truck.

They're good enough for me. I don't need fancy interior and shite.

Yea stuff like transmissions is for the birds.

Our work trucks have been hauling 12k+ for 200,000 miles and haven't had 1 transmission issue.
4 dodge diesels. 2 5.9s and 2 6.7s.

18k to fix the motor?
Yeah that is what I thought but saw the bill as I could not even imagine having to pay that?? He did and bought a new Ford F150.Gas. Had to let the dully sit for awhile trying to sell it.
The coolant runs under the manifold and it got into the oil is what he said, spun bearings.

It will still get 10-15k a year but I hear ya. My price range is the key issue more than anything. I know it confines me to a limited selection.
Anything to stay away from on the Chevys? It would be the 2008 and up body style if I go Chevy.

I would not buy a Ford diesel in that year/price range.
Some are OK, many are not. There are many reasons Ford took their diesel engine program in-house; most have been cited in this thread.
IMHO, the Duramax/Allison combo is the truck to have in the range you are looking. Not a fan of the Cummins on long trips. Rams are better now that they cured the transmission issues.

The newer dodge transmissions are fine and have been for a few years.

I had a 1999 7.3 last year to haul my trailer for work.... motor ran good but everything else on the truck went to hell... the truck itself was just too old.... Dodge Diesel is the way to go.... if you can get a 6 speed manual your in good shape... I've never had a dodge automatic to say how bad the transmissions are but I guess everyone else has. Funny how everybody goes on about 6.0 being the worst motor but I bought an 04 f250 put an egr delete, best truck I have ever owned only put 45K miles before I sold it... but I miss it every day

I was on the fence about 3 years ago kinda like you are. I had about 18k to spend and needed a truck to pull the travel trailer and tractor. I ended up finding a 2007 F250 CC 4x4 with 102k for 16500. I got the Oasis and felt good becasue the majority of the big stuff had been repaired already by the dealer.I changed all the fluids and filters over the first 3 or 4 four months and it runs like a top with no leaks or issues.Just be patient and you should be able to find something.

My 7.3L f-350 got totalled and I looked at all the crap Ford produced between '03 and '12. I am not driving anything that requires hippie juice (exhaust fluid). Ended up finding a mint condition 7.3L crew cab F-350 4x4 in Phoenix for $12k with 130,000 miles.

Looks like you won't be buying any new diesels for a pretty good while
