Chris Bee and Inside Out Precision are good follows for just general tuning and arrow info. Bee is sponsored to the gills now so probably recommend his older content. You’ll eventually click on a Ranch Fairy video and there’s no harm in doing so, just recognize he learned that being a villain got him views so he kinda doubled down on the more ridiculous aspects of shooting heavy arrows, some decent knowledge to gain from at least hearing what his approach is. He’s at least somewhat responsible for bringing FOC back into focus and shooting a bit heavier, which most people could benefit from learning about.

If you can get past his annoying arse laugh, he has a lot of good information to offer. You kind of have to know enough to know when what he’s saying doesn’t apply to you though. For instance, he pushes really heavy broadheads, like 200+ grains. It’s just not necessary for whitetails. But he does have a bunch of good info on bare shaft tuning and playing with different weight heads to get good arrow flight.
The hunting public guys have some videos with him on their channel that are really good too. They’re much more to the point, actually tuning their arrows to their bows, and not all the other bs to weed through.

Thanks. Ive watched Ranch Fairy stuff some in the past.
What threw me off was this guy I was listening to recently was pretty adamantly opposed to bare shaft tuning and strictly used 100gr Iron Wills. I guess he was using collars to get 16% FOC with such a light head?? Wasn’t sure if this was the same general philosophy as RF or not. I guess so.

125 thunderhead simply because I have so many.
I think my FOC about 16 as well on 480 arrow. I cannot wait to shoot something with my new bow

Inserts/collars most likely in combination with a smaller diameter/lighter shaft. My setup is something close to 14% with a 75gr insert, a 100gr head, and a 5mm arrow shaft. Mid to low teen FOC isn’t all that tough to achieve without going overboard and will get you the vast majority of the benefits of it, with diminishing returns after that at the expense of speed. Nothing inherently magical about FOC it’s just one factor that can increase penetration with the goal of achieving a full pass through. Search the Ed Ashby reports on YouTube and you’ll get a lot of the context on why RF does this or that, and all the factors that Ashby developed back in the 80s.

Simply put, I shoot mechanicals because I never learned to properly tune fixed heads.

Rage Hypodermics No Collar 125 grain. 5/5 past 2 seasons Ive used them. They’ve ran 20-125 yds door knob dead. Super accurate. Until they fail me I’m good with them
My only complaint is the older Rage 2.0 with collars could be used a few times. The hypodermic blades are thin and bend upon impact so for me they are one and done

Rage - one awesome performance and the next bounced off a rib at 15 yards. No penetration
I didn't want to go down this path but here we go
No it didn't
A rage (or any broadhead) does not just bounce off a rib, or even a shoulder. It just physically can not.

Well over half the horror stories you read online about heads are simply wrong.

Grim Reaper Whitetail specials are great. If you place it right you will definitely "Watch'em Drop". Old age forced me to reduce draw weight so I switched to the GR Carnifours since my kinetic energy was right on the
65ft-lb borderline recommended for Whitetail Specials.
Before mechanicals I had been using 1-1/8'' fixed blades and even though we found our deer dead the blood trails weren't satisfactory and several were found because we heard where they crashed.

I shoot both and appreciate both. Tune your bow, like really tune your bow. It’s either tuned or it’s not. There is no such thing as a “super tune.”
I have a combination of Evolution Hydes, QAD Exodus, and some Grim Reaper Fatal steels I’m curious about in two quivers for my compounds.
For my longbow, it’s all fixed obviously. I keep VPA 3 blades and Simmons heads handy for it.

Does anybody here remember the mechanical broadhead thread a few years ago where some baw had a full blown autistic meltdown over Rage?

I just went to a 300gr single bevel broadhead for this season with the crossbow*. I'm going to try out the Ashby Foundation/Ranch Fairy philosophy with the heavy arrow/FOC setup.
*Yes, I'm not a real hunter. Getting the left shoulder replaced 2 days after hunting season is over. Planning on getting the right shoulder done after season closes in '26. Hopefully, I can pick up the Mathews compound in the fall of '26. I apologize for offending the purists' sensibilities.

Better get a stiff bolt. That’s a shite ton of weight and could result in a sloppy tune out of a x bow with a fixed head.
Why not do a 150 grain option?

I've got stiff sticks. Was shooting in the yard all evening yesterday. Got it dialed in pretty quickly, actually. Was surprised.

Depends on what you’re hunting. If you’re talking about deer, mechanicals do better. That’s according to the only study I’ve seen on this.

I shoot 100 gr Slick Tricks. They fly like a field tip. Ive always preferred fixed blades because a mechanical can fail to deploy. Also mechanicals may not get complete passthroughs due to loss of energy at deployment. A fixed blade with chiseled tip to smash through bone will rarely fail.
Mechanicals were designed to fly like fieldtips when many early fixed blades poi differed from fieldtips. Now you can purchase fixed blades that fly like fieldtips.

Not to be a Richard here but that is flat out false. It happened to me opening day. Deer quartered away and/or crouched and I hit her elbow. It was a hollow “thwock”, and I shite you not the arrow bounced back 6” from where she was standing. Could not believe it.
