They are legal to use, a flathead will nail em in the river.

Some people so strongly believed it to be true that they would hotly disagree when told fishing with goldfish was not illegal. To those I simply handed a fishing regulations booklet and asked them to please find the goldfish ban for me, since none of us on the job could.

I’m still waiting.

Yep. No one can find the law anywhere but are so confident they are banned. Use them all the time and get from bait shops. The big ones can set off a yo-yo.

It is not illegal in LA, end of story... For a time many many years ago City Park in NOLA had a ban on fishing with gold fish and a small sign stating that fishing with goldfish was not legal(perhaps this is where this got started).

Used to live on the lake and my live in girl friend had an aquarium. Had some gold fish in it and I put a small sun fish I caught in it. Everyday the flowing fins of the goldfish kept getting smaller and smaller. I doubt if any got loose they were scarfed up quickly.

Caught the biggest crappie I've ever seen alive (not mounted) up in Oklahoma with a lionhead goldfish (those fat bodied bubble eyed with forehead growth looking goldfish). Could have stuck a coke can lengthwise in his mouth easy.

The hybrid striper up there love goldfish too.

The crystal clear water in many of those OK lakes makes the goldfish an easy to spot target for gamefish.

Used to feed my Oscar goldfish after he outgrew worms. Was pretty cool to see the scales ejected from his gills as he chewed them up. Kinda same effect but in slow motion as the glitter flying off the strippers on the pole at the ....nevermind

We have used this simple trick for 45 years.

Buy plain ole shiners, and dip them in mercurochrome once you have them on the hook. Instant goldfish, legal, and a lot cheaper.

Yep. there is no prohibition anywhere in the regs regarding use of goldfish as bait. Hammered the catfish running jugs a couple weeks back on gold fish
