Will be in Pass Christian for the Labor Day weekend. How is the fishing/crabbing on the East Side of BSL? I'm contemplating taking my boat (17' Alweld Semi V) and trying to catch a few crabs/fish one day. The house we rented for the weekend is on Johnson Bayou/Bayou Portage.

Any advice would be appreciated.

You can definitely catch fish around Bayou Portage. Fish the marsh on a falling tide for reds and flounder. If you get a lot of rain before though it can make fishing harder.

Is Bayou Portage brackish water?

Plenty of redfish all back in the marsh of Bayou portage and north of there around the Wolf and delisle/acadian bayous. Your boat is perfect for that area. Can also catch plenty reds and big drum along the hwy90 bridge and train bridge. A little early for good numbers of trout in the bay, but still plenty can be found. Just remember, you can't keep those 12" LA dink trout over here.

Do you have a dip net or traps?

I have 23 double ring nets, typically bait with turkey necks and perch heads..... okay to do that over there?

Have caught a good many on Turkey necks this summer on south side shoreline of portage. No issue with nets. Think you need a $5-10 license for traps.

Never had any luck with crabs that way. Flounder might start to be trickling out by then though, got to watch the reports to see where they are when you go.

Yes. Have done pretty well at times along the sea wall north of the highway bridge. Depends on the ride and such of course.

Yep. I've only used the nets off of a pier or the sea wall in BSL/Waveland.

“Going crabbing” is a perfect excuse to booze cruise over to the BSL harbor and bar hop.

Upstairs at Trapanis, upstairs at 200, bar at Fields, 119, TBT.

Ride down to Pinchers and buy some crabs.

...took all day to catch these crabs....

I have a place on that side of the Pass. Neighbors said they have seen a few schools of reds coming thru. I wonder if you rented my place?

Fishing and crabbing are pretty hot right now. Bull reds are just moving in the bay and slots are everywhere. Crabbing is on fire. I just finished cleaning some trout, so I know they're cooperating - the storms pushed in some good water, although this wind has it a little dirty right now.

There are tons of Louisiana legal trout where youre staying, but youll probably need to work your way towards the mouth to find good numbers of MS legal ones right now.

Update; crabbing sucks. 3 hours yesterday with 10 nets out, caught 3 crabs.

Fishing; we soaked some shrimp up against the bridge and caught a drum.

Boating Etiquette; Sucks. Trump Flag Flying (I'm a trump Guy FWIW) run on plane less that 50 feet from you..... happened 3 times yesterday.

Teenage Fishing partner; tired, he's use to fishing where we catch fish/crabs and "just wants to go ride around later"

I did go buy some bait shrimp in Port of BSL yesterday, beautiful 21/25s for $2.50 lb. They had a couple charter captains cleaning up a mess of white trout. I think they went out to the islands (my boat is to small)

Bummer. June seems to be the prime crabbing month out there. Hope you're having a good time tho!

Ouch. Hate to hear that, especially the DA that doesn't know how to operate a boat. Unfortunately, there's far too many new boat owners this year and most don't have a clue. What time did y'all get out and fish? It's tough when this hot. Early or nothing.

you could probably put together a box of meat for frying at one of the nearshore reefs off of BSL/Waveland/PC with shrimp on the bottom
