Belle River
Witnessed it 1st hand this weekend. People were out there with cast nets and scoop nets pulling BIG arse sac au lait out the culverts. They still had good color to them but all the fish were on the top in search of oxygen. Pretty crazy to see.

They were doing that after Andrew down there too, until the crabs went up on the bank and they went to scooping crabs.

I heard bayou black was bad north of the intracoastal, also heard des allemands is pretty bad along with bayou segnette, cataouatche and Salvador seem to be doing fine, hearing crackerhead (verret) has dead bass and sacalait floating already
I fished the spillway out of belle river public landing yesterday....didn't see the 1st dead fish floating, the sportsman and I caught bass at every stop, they were aggressive and showed no signs of stress, I didn't go to the south end

My brother called me a couple days ago to come scoop fish up from the canal behind his house. Don't know the name of it but was in St. Amant.
We scooped some nice bass near the bank. There were tons of small perch and some big carp or gue I think.

quote:Is turnover the cause? I've heard some reports of people netting catfish looking for oxygen and also finding dead fish in the canals around St. Amant but that's only hearsay I haven't seen it first hand.
Fish KillsNone on the Diversion yet

For every other high water/ Storm event in that I have seen down there for the past 11 years there has been a kill. I expect one with Isaac. The Diversion still has water flowing very fast, if memory serve it happens when the water flow slows...

Was wondering if it was a fall turnover caused by the rains. I find it hard to imagine we had enough surge or turbelence to stir up sludge and leaves in the canals. Someone said saltwater intrusion but I definitely find that hard to believe in St Amant with the pumps running.

Turnover plays a role...the high wind causes turnover in a very short amount of time and also puts a lot of organic matter in the water. bacteria begin decomposing all this organic matter consuming all the oxygen in the water in the process. runoff from surrounding fields also brings oxygen depleting nutrients with it. the water that falls out of the swamp is also stagnant and anoxic (no oxygen). you'll likely see tons of dead fish when the water finally falls out of the swamp
i rode all through blind river 4 days after gustav, it was pretty bad

those pumps are pumping runoff from nearby agricultural areas...big factor

We got 3' of storm surge at the house before the rain water got to us. Many other places got it also, just depends on the area and the terrrain...

Thanks wick, you and pool cleared it up, I didn't realize we had that kind of surge in the rivers and canals also hadn't thought about the runoff from the swamps and fields not to mention those fancy subdivision yards with their fertilized grass dumping in the nutrients.
