I'd just reiterate in your mind over and over there's no such thing as a 5 year old being safe with a gun. I don't believe its possible.
However, with direct involvement and constant supervision, I don't see a problem with getting him on a deer. Just don't fool yourself into thinking he's ready for more responisbility even if he drops one, no matter how well behaved, mature, or experienced he is.
Good job to you introducing him to the outdoors at such a young age. He's a lucky kid to get to spend that type of quality time with his father, and it sounds like yall have a big future together doing something that I've always found meaningful with my own father and brother. If you havent read it, I'd really recommend The Old Man and the Boy by Robert Ruark. Happy hunting!

Started mine with a 22 single shot at 5 off the back porch. 410 pump at 8 and got his first squirrel. He killed a deer at 12 with a 270 and is still shooting it 13 years later.

My .02…my son was as mature as any. He sat and watched me kill deer in a stand from 4 years old.
I started him out with a .22 so he wouldn’t flinch upon recoil and made sure he was a marksman. Made sure he understood what it meant to take a life, and we eat everything we kill.
Bought him a .44 crack barrel for his 7th birthday and he never shot it until he killed his first deer with it that year. Figured I’d kill 2 birds with 2 stones; get his first rifle and have a primitive arm for short range stands for life.
Sounds like you’re already teaching him gun safety and reading deer sign. Keep doing what you’re doing and you’ll have a lifelong hunting buddy. My son is 22 now and ate up with it like a bunch of us. Best part of it is he’s still young enough that he still likes cleaning deer, I haven’t had to get my hands dirty in the last 6 years or so.
