I saw that they had some groups on Facebook that had tracking dogs. Don’t have any links but they were in La. and Ms. Go back to the last blood and make ever widening circles. I know you know that but y’all will pick up the trail eventually if you keep trying. Good Luck. I wish I was closer because I would gladly come help. I love that stuff.

That’s the one. Good job. I was just starting to search for him.

He was it fell a few yards back then fell and left a pool. Picked up droplets from there for about 30 yards then lost it. Six of us made several multi multiple circle but no luck. Good and bad. That was shot right at dark last night but he killed a doe this morning. His first deer. So it’s still great

Dog could still easily find that trail for your boy. It truly is amazing to see a good dog at work.

If I were close to Mississippi, I'd let you use my dog to get your kid's first buck. She's relentless. Good luck.

What kind of blood ? Was he dragging hisself or up and walking ?Sometime if gut shot they don’t bleed much and the skin covers the entry wound if they walk. If you go back to last blood it may show a bit higher on brush. I’ve never lost one and killed a bunch of them. Don’t know your experience with this situation but luckily I never lost one if I had some blood to start with. Good Luck.

Sorry for no updates. We think we figured out what happened. His shot was literally right before dark, about 130 yards almost head on , a shot I wouldn’t want to make. Neither my father in law or I brought a spot light, both kicked ourself in the arse
We sat in stand for a few minutes of excitement and got out because we couldn’t see or didn’t think he hit it, couldn’t really see in scope any longer. Between that night and next day we pieced it together. We found a pool of blood about 20 yards behind where he shot, then a few yards over a patch of clots, then a trail of about 30 yards of blood then nothing.
We think he hit it head on and it walked back and laid down, thus the pool of blood. Had we had a light to blink and saw it we would have sat and waited an hour. Think he got up and walked away when we got down.
Father in law going back this weekend and will look for buzzards to hopefully find horns.
As I said, he killed a nice doe the next morning, so he was still happy. No clue how to post pics or I would.

What kind of gun if you don’t mind?

243.
I’ve always duck hunted since I was a kid. Just got into deer hunting. My father in law has a bunch of rifles. This is what he started my son on.
