Tried searching, know they are out of business.

Is this motor a deal killer? Are parts available for these engines?

Been looking for a boat and have been avoiding any with this motor, but there are quite a few nice boats out there with the etec. Am I making a mistake by just dismissing them?

Some parts are hard to get on motors that are in production. I wouldn't know specifically though. But depending how old it is maybe you can use this a negotiation tactic to the seller. I would imagine it's a bit easier to sell one with a Yamaha or Suzuki.

It's more like just not making that product. Good info here.

I sold both of mine.
I use to be an OMC Johnson/evinrude fan and after bombardier bought OMC parts got harder to find.
Techs trained to work on the motors was hard, but also will get harder to find.

1. Yes, they are out of business. I'd stay away from them due to to parts availability issues and re-sale value issues.
2. I think Mercury agreed to make some parts for Evinrude when Evinrude first shut down. But that was supposedly only for 2 years, which has pretty much ended. (Mercury is having enough trouble keeping their own parts available to dealers.)
3. New Mercurys are hard to find, depending on the size/model (250-400 h.p.). But I think Yamahas are still available in the smaller sized engines (7090 h.p.).

Depends how much value they are putting into the motor. In this market and with the availability of outboards in parts then I wouldn't balk too much at it. Regardless of engine make getting something repaired with replacement parts right now is a crap shoot.

As someone who owns one that I like a wholeeeeeee lot (200 HO), you should put some thought into it. They are fantastic engines, but the service support network for them was never very strong to begin with. I haven't had mine worked on in a couple of years but I imagine it's only going to get worse. Parts availability is kinda ok and kinda not. The G1's have some commonality with old OMC stuff and all that is pretty easy to get, like trim modules, water pumps etc. Specific etech stuff im no so sure about, especially the G2 since they were not in production terribly long. Id hate to smoke an ecm right now...

I wouldn't pass on a boat strictly because its wearing an etech, but I would try to nudge the price down on the deal because of it. 10 years from now, who knows. There just aren't enough of them out there to keep the parts and service market alive IMO.

Ya, I dont have any qualms about working on the motor myself or even waiting for parts right now. I understand the logistic side of everything is jacked up right now.

Just want to know Im not making a $10k or more mistake.

Not a deal killer as long as a discount is baked into the deal.

They aren't time bombs like the FICT motors were. Id charge a disposal fee to buy a boat with one of those on it. The etechs are great engines. Finding a trained tech 10 years from now is my concern.

Mercury agreed to supply motors for the transoms that Evinrude/BRP owned. Mercury didn’t agree to make Evinrude parts.

Finding a good dealer was a problem before they stopped producing motors. I have a Etec G2 and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t concerned about post warranty parts availability. I wouldn’t let an Etec stop me from buying the right boat but it would have to be factored into the price.

A G2? The one positive I try to remind myself of is that G2’s were sold with a 10 year warranty as late las 2018. So parts should be available until at least 2028.

Makes more sense. My reply was based on earlier comment from my dealer.

What HP engine are you looking at? I have two nearly complete 200’s that we tried making into one working motor to no avail.

Would be a 90 or 115. Found a 18ft express with a 90. Just something to stroll around the rigolets with.

If it’s a solid engine and seems well maintained you could leverage the fact they are out of business to get a great deal on the boat and just plan to repower it in a few years.

Thats what I did even before brp cut the evinrude line. 4ish years into mine and I've just replaced thpe trim motor. It's a hell of a strong engine.
