Hope it's not got an outboard. Some manufacturers used to say it can burn the pistons-- but I'll defer to Downshift

The arsehole expert at BBC says he would rather see someone use 10% ethanol than the wrong octane. Especially if the engine is relatively new.

Unless it's going to be stored for long periods, or has 30 year old fuel lines, you would be better off running e10.

The additive pack on premium fuel is considerably better than the ones used for 93 nonethanol. They typically get bottom of the barrel additives and see higher intake valve temps.

Fuel does more than just burn.

I'm no expert, but I don't run 87 in anything over a 10:1 compression ratio.

ETA: obviously timing and load also come into play, but as a general rule.

I know nothing about this, especially compression, but 87 is what is recommended for mercs. The problems with running higher have been outlined at the site.

Hey, I am no expert either.

I do know 2 things for sure:

1. the engine builder says run 91 to 94 octane. This is a car engine, not an outboard motor.

2. This engine has a carb. We have an old frame off restored Jeep CJ that we put a new crate motor in a number of years ago and a new carb. Garage stored and run at least once a month. Had ethanol gas in it and started acting up. The inside of the carb looked like white powder in the bowl.

Everything we own has ethanol free gas in it now.
May be making a mistake but I am not going to run ethanol free in this new engine unless the builder comes back and says otherwise.

Will send them an email inquiry now.

Thanks for the input from everybody.

Yeah, I was just talking about merc outboards.

Just make sure you turn your fuel over every couple of months and you'll be fine.

A trick I do on our old carb hunting truck, 1 oz per gallon of two stroke oil.

I do the same thing for the really high rpm side by sides.

It seems to stop any gumming up, and, if you run klotz, the exhaust smells like bananas

Do NOT do if you have any sort of cat or if the thing is tuned lean as shite.

The highest octane non-ethanol gas I’ve seen in the area is at Route 22 in Madisonville ! They sell all grades on non-ethanol.

Mercury recommends 89 I'm pretty sure in some of their R engines. 400 and 450 for sure.

Very possible. Never owned one and can't imagine having one for my uses. One of our posters does. I do not know how he chooses his fuel.
