Yea after all the banter I had to go back and check for myself; gotta side with the black ducks. I've killed a pile of mottleds over the last ten years or so in the marsh and those pictured on his wall are way darker. They're very rare in our area but occasionally can luck out. Similarly rare but occasionally killed in S. La is the "Mexican Duck". Look that one up, pretty cool; and no I don't mean the Squealers.

Hoping for a BIG bull sprig this year or maybe a wigeon. Have killed plenty of both over the years but wigeon have gotten rare on us in my area and the pins all seem to be either lacking their sprig or just busted up too bad for wall. Have a big gray at taxi now from EZ opener last year so should look good on the wall. Never too early to be getting ready......

waiting on a gwt drake and hen mount and also a woodie drake and hen from a second taxidermist

killed quite a few mottled ducks this year, but i doubt i'll mount any that i kill

i'm hoping for a can, pintail drake, redhead or widgeon this year....killed a widgeon drake, but he was too messed up to put on the wall

Here are a couple of ducks I shot on one of our farms. The wood for the box also came from a barn on same property. And yes I know picture sucks.
Iphone + Bad lighting.

Killed this 3 years ago... it's still in the freezer. I wonder if it's still mountable?

The guy that did my shadow box mount is Shane Smith from Bridgeport AL. Have a look at all of the cool stuff he has done. Shane Smith

No doubt the pictures in question are black ducks. They are much darker than a mottled duck.

These days it is very hard to use the white on the speculum to tell the difference. Both species have bred amongst the same limited gene pool of each species for so long that that the white has a lot of variant to it.

When you see a mottled and a black side by side you can't mistake one for the other. The mottled has almost more of a cinnamon color to it while the black is just very dark.

The following is a picture out of a trophy room with the ducks in question:

The top three ducks are from left to right:
Black duck
Mexican duck
Mottled duck

The bottom duck is a black/mexican cross.

These birds are all verified by several ornithologists. Hope that helps with the id. You can see how much darker the true black duck is than the others, you just can't mistake it once you have seen them a few times.

Thanks.

The duck above with the semi-green head is a brewers duck. I have two in my trophy room also, I'll see if I can find some pictures.

It's a mallardxGray duck cross.

Oh yes I'd mont a gray duck it's our king bird in the coastal marshes, why not mount it?

Mallard/Grey seems to be the consensus...

They're definitely beautiful birds, settles it...the one I have in the freezer is too big and purty not to mount
