Get you a shock collar. Sit and watch him from a window and light his arse up when he digs for a few weeks.

dam man dont keep him in a 10x10 pen. If you love the dog let him be happy. You got the dog, deal with the holes. Its not that big of deal. I have 2, they dig.. but its not a big deal

That's sorta what I was thinking. It's one thing if you are a subsistence-hunter or farmer/rancher, to deal with your working dogs in that way, but to get a dog for sport/pleasure and confine him unnecessarily just so he doesn't mess up tour yard seems a little off imo. Train him not to dig.

First thing I would do is get money back from the trainer cause they fricked up your dog. 8 months and it digs up the back yard? They didn't train it for shite.

Or maybe he's not used to being home and not being ran everyday, therefore he has a lot of extra energy and decides to unleash it by digging.

It was like 7.5 months... That's awesome with your pup! I was gonna doing mine myself, then I realized I has no idea what I was doing nor did I have the patience.

most trainers don't deal with yard problems..... simply getting the dog into hunting form - nothing more nothing less.

expecting a dog cooped up in a kennel to know how to act in a yard.....

bird dogs require a lot of work... espcecially those conditioned and bred to do it...

Yea, I thought the same. 16 weeks old and already have them on a whistle and hand signaled trained?

I have never heard of a 16 week old dog that was fully trained.

Like the other poster mentioned, sending a dog to hunting/training school does not fix digging problems. They are there to learn obedience and how to hunt. A dog can be totally obedient but will still dig if you aren't around to tell it no when it's digging.

and in my humble opine if you really want to see how a retriever is trained...

watch them work with NO collar.....

I have had some good dogs over the years....some borderline on great...

hand signals at 16 weeks....... honestly marking skills should be being honed at that age....

i am not a fan of handling until the dog is steady first...

going to handling too young can create a popping problem..

If you want your dog to be the best hunting dog possible, don't let that fricker roam free in the backyard and definitely don't let him in the house. Keep him penned up outside. If you just want a pet, do whatever your wife says to do.

For some reason, all my Labs have been diggers. They have been awesome retievers but will tear up a yard with the quickness. The only way to cure it is to put the collar on them and nuke them while in the act. Usually requires a follow up jolt to drive the point home but this usually only stops them from digging in one particular spot. Sometimes they just relocate and resume their digging. Only way to keep a Better Homes and Gardens backyard is to kennel them.
